Scratched windscreen

Ok the next job on my list for the FF is to repair some scratches on the windscreen. There's a patch about half the size of my hand on the far right of the screen that looks to have been caused by a faulty wiper blade at some point.

I've seen various scratch repair kits for sale, but to be honest I'm about as handy as Frank Spencer so if anyone could recommend a glass repairer in the Essex / Suffolk area I'd appreciate it.

Cheers

Depends on how deep the scratches are but have you tried something like t-cut. It works a treat on very fine scratches.

Vorbis, if you read this thread re wscreen scratches thread you'll see it culminates in my posting about proper windscreen scratch products I bought last year along with the results. It's a time consuming job but good results can be achieved.

Thumbs Up

Jeweller's Rouge is made of Iron Oxide and not particularly abrasive. You'd be there forever. Much better to use any of the Cerium Oxide based compounds which are made specifiaclly for glass polishing.

However, as Mr PLD has discovered, glass is rather hard, especially windscreen glass. Unless yo uhave a way of getting better access to the screen (i.e. a platform) then forget it. You won't get the required pressure without standing on the bonnet.

Big stone, telephone, insurance policy and a credit card for the 50 quid excess. Thumbs Up

I wouldn't condone mzplcg's 50 quid cure which I'm sure was tongue in cheek Shocked Thumbs Up

The cerium oxide process did work very well and is a great remedy for £23 odd if you've already got a power tool and have the endeavour to see it through with much grafting but it really was tedious and doubtless many would call time before getting a result they're pleased with... I remain pleased with the results though and so it was worth it Thumbs Up

Funnily enough though it was the wife's first suggestion Laughing

I've found a couple of places online that do glass polishing for mainly shop windows so might try one of them or keep an eye out for a used replacement. Might give the t-cut a little go in the meantime to see if it gives an improvement though

OK then, hypothetically, since a scratched windscreen can be an MOT failure would you claim then? If a screen fails the MOT then it can be thought of as "failed" in its function, i.e. to keep wind & rain out whilst allowing you to see through it. Same as a crack really.

I know I would claim. They're quick enough to take my money.
