Australia 2008 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Atacama Sand

Does the tdv6 require the expensive belt change at 160,000km like in the D4? And if yes, is there more room at the rear of the engine bay to do this?

I guess it would be a harder decision if the 3.0 (306bhp) were available, like it is in the RRS - why isn't it?

They offer both the 300bhp V6 and the V8 in the Sport.

• SDV6 3.0-litre diesel: 302bhp, 516lb ft
• SDV8 4.4-litre diesel: 334bhp, 546lb ft

Given the +150kg extra weight why on earth would you choose the V8?

It's now a 7 year old engine which has had very few updates. Audi makes 100bhp more from a similar sized engine. BMW makes 30bhp more from a 3 litre engine.

Time for it to die and make way for the ingeniums.

Love the 4.4 engine in my 405.

It never even occurred to me to consider the V6, when you have the option for more power and torque then why would you?

Economy of the V8 is staggering, on a recent motorway trip to Gatwick from Leeds I got 40.1 MPG average, all at normal legal motorway speeds. Frequently see high 30’s on longer A road runs. But also see 14 on short round town journeys on a cold engine so not so good .

I tried both and preferred the 3.0. It's very smooth, quiet and quick enough. Each to their own. They are both good choices.

Having used the closely related SDV6 in the Disco 4, the V6 seemed the natural choice but, nice though it is, it’s even better with the twin turbo in the D4 Thumbs Up

Unsurprisingly, the SDV8 was noisier and rougher than the V6, but (if you like this sort of thing) also much more characterful and it really benefits from the second turbo and immense amounts of torque and boy, is it quick?! The fasted car I’ve owned before was a Focus RS Mk 2 (with the 2.5 litre Volvo 5 cylinder engine). In real world driving it feels quicker than that Shocked

Many people don’t notice, or aren’t too bothered about, the difference in cornering, but I found the V8 cornered noticeably flatter than even the much lighter V6.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the V6 but, for me, the V8 suited me down to the ground.

PS: Comparing Diesel engines on horsepower is relatively meaningless; even if BMW can squeeze more horsepower out of a 3 litre 6, it’s meaningless without seeing and comparing the torque curves. Concentrating on outright BHP figures only encourages manufacturers to make ever more high revving and anaemic 4’s and 6’s (this doesn’t include the TDV6!). Engines like the SDV8 are highly unlikely to be built again, so I wanted to grab one while I still could!

You obviously haven't driven them back to back Thumbs Up I've got two V8 Diesels and wouldn't swap either for a TD6 Thumbs Up 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

Exactly! Flattering peak BHP figures are only the happy combination of a high (or high-ish) torque figure, at just one point in the rev range, multiplied by a lots and lots of revs! Rolling Eyes

For driveability and properly impressive performance, you need flat-ish and broad torque curves.

+1, this is where the V8 Diesel excells, it is undoubtedly the best engine in any 4x4 of this type. You don't even notice a trailer behind - the torque is just stunning, she just pulls away from standstill and the power is unrelenting. We also have a 5.0 Supercharged here, and whilst that will trump an SDV8 on outright acceleration, with a heavy trailer the V8 Diesel wins hands down. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17
