Ensuring that the 2nd, rear-most sump drain plug is also removed at each oil change as that plug drains a reservoir into which the turbo oil drains. The reservoir when not drained can fill with sludge over time which risks inhibiting oil flow from the turbos.

Mikey - you are the resident turbo expert and I know I am likely asking questions that other 3.6 owners either have heard answers to before or are too afraid to ask. I also know it's a topic that's been done to death so I'll apologies up front Thumbs Up

1. Is there anything owners can do to prevent turbo failure?
2. Are there any early signs?
3. Is prevention better than cure (given any early signs)
4. Should we replace as a pair

Any feedback and help is appreciated. Mine is approaching 80k. Has had OTT levels of TLC and is a towcar for 1800kg caravan. It had a full transmission service at 70k and has oil and filter at every 5k.

Also...and this is the biggie....how much is it to replace the necessary should the worst happen.
thanks in advance,
From all 3.6 owners Bow down

1. Drive gently until fully warm. Not just until the coolant is up to temp, it takes much longer for the engine oil to warm up. Change the oil and filter every 10k MAX. Use only good quality oil and filters. After a drive, allow to cool before switching off, to prevent heatsoak within the bearings. Consider replacing the oil feed pipe at 80k miles...

2. Not really. They just go pop

3. Prevention is always better than the cure. A few quid spent on oil + filters is always going to be cheaper than a pair of turbos...

4. Always advisable. If ones turbo has gone pop, it's likely the other is not far behind it...

Price to repair is dependant on the repairing garage. A brand new OEM turbo is best part of £1000 + VAT each, and I wouldn't use anything else. Recon turbos are very hit and miss, as calibration can only be done at the BW factory (unless things have changed recently)

Thumbs Up

Cheers Sir. All nice easy answers which is appreciated on such a complex matter. Mine is in for service in next couple of weeks so I'll get the oil pipe feed replaced too.

Can anyone help with an LR part number for said oil pipe feed. Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

Any vehicles fitted with turbo(s) should be 'simmered' after a hard run.

IOW, let the engine idle for a couple of minutes (like after pulling off the motorway) to allow the turbos to cool. This will prevent oil carbonising in the turbo due to the extreme heat and no oil flow condition - which will eventually block oil flow to the turbo.

I did note your 'issue' and Mikey sorting it Thumbs Up

I think that's the reason for my question. My Rangey gets minimum daily use, then drags the tintent at a weekend, along with the family of 5 and all the associated junk. Now mine's hitting 80k I wanted to ensure I am doing everything possible to prevent any major issues. I'm booking it in for a service this week and getting Dan @ Duckworths to supply the oil feed pipe as per Mikey instruction. Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

Mikey, thanks for these tremendous turbo tips Very Happy

How much time would a specialist normally take to swap out either turbo or both or an 3.6? Cheers Andy

This is an interesting perspective on 3.6 turbo related motor failure.

Interesting, but I wonder how much it costs?

Actual time taken, I can't remember

However, it's best part of a day's work to get bob turbos off the engine

Quite a bit of cleaning of intake/boost pipes to remove oil from the system

Always takes a bit longer to go back together

20-24 hours wouldn't be unreasonable, despite what the book time says...

Could I ask for turbo advice, please - - after barely two years of owning my TDV8 I am suffering early onset FullFat anxiety.

She is a 2007 model about to clock up 200,000Km, but has been regularly serviced by the local LR garage. There are service entries every 20,000Km or so. Having read this forum avidly, I realise that this is far too infrequent.

I had an EGR failure in Spain and was able quite easily to drive her back to France by keeping the revs above 2,000. Both EGRs were replaced by my local LR garage and very soon after (300Km) the top hose blew off the thermostat block. I have just replaced the block (on which each hose junction was littered with pink crystals which was totally visible to the garage, but they said/did nothing) and am alarmed by the state of the air inlet tubes, by the throttle. One side is very oily and the other, the side on which the EGR failed, is very sooty.

Also, when draining the engine oil the second, vertical, drain plug very little oil came out, barely enough to cover the bottom of the collection bowl - - are the turbo oil return pipes blocked . . . ?

So, my question: how worried should I be about imminent turbo failure?

Cheers,

Wouldn't be worried at all Thumbs Up

The excess soot is perfectly normal with a faulty EGR valve

The rear drain does not hold much oil at all, around 300ml from memory Confused

Second what Mikey says, I changed my EGR valves and had lots of sutt to clean out of the pipes and throttle body. The second sump plug only holds a small amount and is to get rid of any sludge. Just clocked 134k on mine, I change oil and filter at least every 8K to keep it all clean. Thumbs Up
