Brand new £70,000 Range Rover stuck on mudflats

A young man who'd recently taken ownership of a brand new Range Rover decided to take it out for a spin off road yesterday afternoon - and soon regretted it, after the £70,000 vehicle got stuck in mudflats off Weston-super-Mare.

The 4x4 was stuck some 400 meters from the main beach at Weston. A hovercraft operated by the Burnham Area Rescue Boat charity was deployed, and efforts were made to free the vehicle using spades and boards.

However, when this was unsuccessful, the RNLI used a tracked launching vehicle to pull the Range Rover back to safety.



The rescue came not a moment too soon: a few minutes later, and the vehicle would have been lost to the incoming tide.

A spokesman for BARB said: “The driver of the Range Rover was a young man who had attempted to test out the vehicle, having watched TV adverts of it being driven off-road – but without realising how dangerous the mudflats can be.

“This was a good example of close team working to get a successful outcome.

“Our advice to motorists using local beaches is never to put their vehicles at risk by driving beyond the hard sand at the top of the beach.”
