Just a suggestion the car could come with a uniquely cut piece of metal that has to be slid in to a corresponding slot on the car before it would start.

LMAO, you mean a proper key? I've said the same before. Keyless entry is good, convenient etc but I still prefer to use a physical ignition key in the car for starting purposes.

So just to tag onto this

Have they fixed this in MY17 cars ? The ones with InControl ?

I know 66 plate MY16 cars were still vulnerable wondering if 66 and 17 plate MY17 cars are ?

No definitive answers anywhere.

Nah they don't like to talk about it... makes it very hard to know if your car is at risk. Cheers, Greg

That Ghost system seems pretty neat so might be a solution.

going to try and ask someone if they know whether the Vulnerability was fixed on MY17 cars.

The keys look identical so if the keyless entry module is the same then I don't see how it is fixed.

sorry if this has been asked, can we clarify exactly how old the car was ?
was it a 2015, 2016 model year or 2017 model year , If it had a sim card in the car must be a 2017 model I take it ? as 2016 model year's did not have a sim card, unless maybe it was a high spec and had wifi ,
2017 model which came out at the end of 16 had the new navigation system in it , the in control tracker came out for 16 model year at the end of 2015...
very worrying the whole thing !

I've just had a Ghost install completed on my new to me 2013 L405 Autobiography. Because mine is an early model of the L405 the system I've has installed will allow the car to start if they don't go through the disarm process but as soon as the gear selector is taken out of Park the engine shuts down. I understand that for the later model L405s it will actually prevent the car from starting. The car is now protected even if they clone or steal the key.

Most half switched on thieves know the location of trackers anyway and just yank them out.

And a tracker is reactive not preventative.

I’ve had the ghost fitted on all my cars, all previous range rovers and my current Svr.
Steering lock to ward away the chancers from breaking in, in the first place and then ghost/ tracker as back ups.

Layering security products is the smartest way to keep hold your car.

If anyone wants the ghost fitting on their car- drop me a pm, the best fitter in the country is a mate of mine and does a special price for range rovers. I don’t think anyone will have fitted as many as this guy. He’s done group buys once various forums before.

The keyless vulnerability can’t be fixed....thieves have taken to simple amplifying your key signal and tricking the car into thinking the key is present. It’s a vulnerability on all keyless cars.

All Range Rover have fixed is the OBD port issue, the same that Bmw amongst others had.

this sucks it truly does , how can such high end cars be so easy to steal ? I noted a report last week said car thefts were up a 1/3 on last year and its high end stuff that's being taken , I am surprised that the car doesn't shut down after it loses the link with thee key fob , which numpty thought that one up ?

I'd be interested in this, sounds like a good setup although maybe a pain to have to key in the pin code each time but that's better than having the car stolen.
I'm down south so not sure of your mate's fitting area.

Range rovers aren’t the only one. Bmw suffered massively.

OBD port theft was the biggest vunerbility for a while. As the port maintained power even when the car was closed and locked. So the thieves simply plugged into it and programmed themselves a key. Various products came along - dummy ports etc before manufacturers caught up.

Anyone remember when trackers became standard fit on range rovers ?!?! There was a reason for that....Insurance companies weren’t insuring then full stop because they were so easy to take.

I know a client of mine who lost 2 in 3 months. Both off the driveway and both without her keys moving.

Arrrh there’s a way round that also. For convenience. So you don’t have to put the code in everytime but the system is still active. There’s an app for IOS devices that pairs with your car as you walk up to it, authorises and deactivates the device and you start up and drive away like usual.

Drop me a pm. I ll pass on his details.

Down south shouldn’t be an issue , can probably arrange for 2-3 cars at once to make it worthwhile.

I wrote a piece on motorbike security for another forum, as a super bike owner I was tired of reading about bikes being taken and one of the biggest issues is apathy , it won’t happen to me, i only left it a minute , I ve heard all the reasons under the sun . The 2 mins it takes to stick on the chain or in this case steering lock for example look mighty appealing when you’re on the phone to the insurance company for the 20th time chasing a payout.
