Upgrade to the final 2012 model L322?

It's nearly 3 years since I entered the L322 world by purchasing a 3.6 tdv8. I bought the L322 on lease which ends in about 2 years time. The maximum age of a lease car at the start of the lease is 7 years. So in 2019, that means possibly upgrading to the last run of the L322. I cant upgrade later than 2019 as the L322 will be too old and I can't afford nor want an L405 at this point.

The reason I'm looking to make this decision now is that I tend to accumulate parts that come up for a good price. If I decide to upgrade I will simply stop accumulating unless it was also useful for a 2012 L322. Parts costs are met under the lease. For example I would consider buying new turbos if I was to keep the current car. Such parts are not that easy to sell if I later decided to upgrade.

Some pros for an upgrade are:
- reliability, as newer, probably better electronics, better diesel motor, particularly as my current L322 will have about 290,000km by then;
- performance, more power/torque in diesel and petrol motors, smooth 8 speed trans in the tdv8, smoother ride with CVDs;
- style, nicer dash/instruments and more modern front end.

Cons against an upgrade:
- cost, I estimate the cost difference between keeping my 3.6 tdv8 compared to a 2012 L322 is at least $30k over 5 years, assuming no major repairs are required. Even if a major repair was required (eg motor) to the current L322 I would still be ahead financially;
- current L322 is going great, its the best car I've ever owned, the 3.6 tdv8 is a beautiful smooth motor for a diesel, I love the ZF 6 speed, it's got a great service history, is in great physical condition, I've replaced the transmission, transfer box, front struts & alternator, and disabled the EGRs;
- current L322 is a good off-roader, as have 18" rims, simple rear struts that probably cope better with corrugated roads than CVDs, single air intake point so custom raised air intake is possible;
- it would be more sensible to plow money into Super, as I face mandatory retirement in 10 years.

While I'd like to grab one of the last of the L322s, I'm leaning toward keeping what I have. What says the brains trust? ______________________________

I'd keep yours if it was me, as you have invested quite a bit in it already.

BTW - "....single air intake point so custom raised air intake is possible;" Really? I thought my 4.4TDV8 only had one entry through drivers side guard?

Thanks Chris.

I thought the 4.4 tdv8 had two air filter boxes one against each guard. I assumed each drew air through their respective guard. Is it a different set up? ______________________________

The 4.4 indeed has 2 intakes but as the primary is on the RHS, a D3/D4 raised intake can be made to fit. However as mine's RH air filter isn't getting filthy the way the 3.0 D4 did, I doubt that I'll go to the trouble of fitting one especially as it would stand out like a sore thumb on these vehicles.
