Changed the front and rear diff oils today..

- Rear diff oil wasn't that bad
- Front was ok too but the drain plug had greasy residue on it

The front diff drain and fill wasn't too bad.. I did the front in 15mins max. The transfer case oil change was most satisfying as the oil was pure black.. Current:
- L560 Velar HSE R-Dynamic D180
- Peugeot 508 2011 - 2.2 HDi GT

Past:
- FFRR V 2010 - 3.6 TDV8
- Citroen C4 1.6i Petrol
- Mitsubishi Shogun 3.2 DID
- Peugeot 607 2.2 HDi
- Nissan Primera 1.8 SVE
- Honda Civic 1.6 VTEC

2008 Range Rover TDV8 3.6 Transfer box capacity conundrum

Hi, I just drained and refilled front and rear diffs which took about a litre each. The transfer box drained about 1.3 Ltrs out and took about 1.6 litres to refill and get to the point where it dribbles from the fill hole.... the general consensus seems to be it should be about 0.95ltr and 1.0ltr from dry??? The car was dead level whilst doing the work so I’m puzzled, did later cars have a bigger transfer box or have I inadvertently gone n filled me glovebox and ashtrays with excess oil? Big Cry Can anyone throw some light on this? Thanks.

Phew glad to hear 1.5 ltrs the right amount. I wonder why it never seems mentioned in manuals etc, instead 0.95 ltrs quoted everywhere ad nauseum. I found some particles of metal in the bottom of the old oil... Big Cry

When I examined the magnetic drain plug off the front diff, it actually had a solid mound/ dome of hard metal particles about 4-5 mm thick on the end, I initially thought it was part of the plug but after attacking it with a screwdriver it all broke away! Astonishing how well that magnet has done its job and captured the crud!
Next job.....Auto gearbox! Shocked Cars done 125000 mls and I think my oil changes are it’s first..

Attaching additional magnets to dumps and diff/ transfer box

Hi does anyone think attaching additional magnets to sumps/ diffs/ transfer box, adjacent to the drain plug would be beneficial? I currently have some exceptionally strong but small magnets I’m thinking of placing them as an additional help to capture suspended metal in oil.

I'm pretty sure the diffs take a measured amount (which is why it's those quantities quoted in the manuals) not filled to the filler hole. If you've done that then you've overfilled it. Ed
