Turn Key, Clunk, All Dead - NOT flat battery.

Hi guys,

Bit of an odd one, just want someone to check my thinking here:

Jump in car, all good, lights on etc.
Turn key, goes to start - massive CLUNK.
All electrics go off, no interior lights, not even the hazards which are independent of the LCM.
Wait a few minutes.
Try again and she fires into life, and I need to reset clock etc.

This morning it happened again. I thought I'd check the battery voltage - 4V - WTF!? Thought battery cells have failed - but why did it do it a few days prior and then work?
Popped neg lead off and measured 12.5V *Scratches head* - then noticed neg lead warm - obvs a short.
Reconnect, "clunk", tighten up and jump in, car starts fine.

My thought is that the starter is sticking? Shorting and creating a massive voltage draw/drop that then kills all other systems.

Would you agree?

my first thought would be a loose battery connection..i wonder if this problem re-occurs now you have re-tightened the terminal... ... - .- -.

I've got a feeling Stan might have it here.

I had a similar problem with my TD6 it went through a funny stage of doing this, yet a few minutes later it would be fine, turned out that some halfwit has used a non genuine cable for the negative on the battery and it doesn't tighten onto the terminal as well as it should and was obviously not making enough contact.
I looked into a new bit of cable, but for £80 odd for a genuine piece shorter than my arm, I decided to wedge a bit of metal in around the terminal and not had any problems since.

I'd keep an eye on it thought

No Cigar Stan, I checked - they were tight as a... well lets just say they were tight Wink

Also the neg lead being warm and the battery voltage (at terminals) being 4V would suggest the problem is elsewhere.

How much of a pig is it to replace the starter on the AJv8 does anyone know?

you may try cleaning the contact on the starter and solenoid first, Dan. I had that happen to me on my Td5 Disco. and cleaning the contact did the trick.
