Sticky front caliper

I'm running a TD6, but has anyone else had this problem?

The passenger side was a failure on the MOT as the tester could hardly turn the wheel, so I replaced the calliper and it's ben fine since but now the drivers side appears to be getting really hot (has been since the MOT)

I stripped it down tonight, replaced the rubber things the sliders go into and cleaned up the sliders as they were pretty tight, pushed back the piston but after putting it all back together, took it for a test drive down the M4 and it's still getting really hot, much hotter than the side i've replaced and the rears.

I'm guessing it's something to do with the piston, its not getting so hot it smokes or anything, but if I was to touch the brake disc I would burn my finger whereas the passenger side doesn't.

Just not sure now, I guess replacement of the calliper would be the best thing?

hi stacker, the pistons do corrode behind the rubber seals. if you go into the wiki on here, i'm sure pete haylands did a strip down, and it should show you how corroded they get.
i've replaced all four of mine, due to the same problem.

it sounds to me its not braking on the passenger side , you should not be able to touch the disc without burning yourself

Thanks GregDav Thumbs Up

I'm sure the passenger side is breaking, it does get hot as do the rears but you literally put your hand within 6 inches of the drivers side and you can feel the heat coming off!

Could be moisture in your brake fluid. I had this once on a ford van and it totally locked up the wheel. After using the brakes a few times the fluid expanded with the heat and locked up the wheel. I changed the fluid and all was well. 2011 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

Thanks, will have a look.

It's a possibility of changing the fluid when i've sorted the rears out too!

I'd replace the caliper(s). The passenger side would tend to seize first as it's nearer to the side of the road and hence picks up more dirt. On my 2004 car the passenger side seized, with the car shuddering as I drove and then clouds of smoke when I stopped. The problem was with corroded pistons. After a roadside repair the permanent solution was a new calliper.

My experience has been that my calipers need freeing off every annual service, no doubt this is made worse by off road driving and lots of road salt in Scotland, and then replacement after 7/8 years. Only Range Rovers since 1988

I had a front caliper stick, the disc got very hot and had vibration whilst driving.
I decided to replace both front calipers and be done with it. No problems since.

I agree with the other posters on here that touching the disc is not a good idea - it gets too hot. However when My caliper failed in a similar way the wheel got hot and the fuel consumption increased. I replaced one and then the other followed it so I would say replace in pairs if you can. Geoff

Has the brakefluid been replaced?Should do it every 2 years!I have also seen that when the rubber brakepipe gets older, that the inside will rot and go soft, resulting in the caliper to stick as the fluid is not flowing freely. 2012 TDV8 Vogue SE 4.4
