oh one other question if I may then I'll stop pestering folk.

Given manufacturers class a DPF as a consumable item, Assuming all things being equal, and no other mechanical issues or oil leaks etc, how long should a DPF last for in terms of miles before being genuinely considered end of life? - mine has done just of 50k. I appreciate it probably is quite a wide range but an average is fine.

thanks

Many members 4.4 tdv8's have done over 100k miles, but I don't remember anyone saying they have replaced their DPF. G reg 2.5VM Vogue Portofino red 1991- 1999

This will sound far more simple than you may believe but, try doing a hard battery reset (maybe need to do it a few times) and almost always the red light will turn to amber on reconnecting the battery...

Hope that helps 👍

After getting the car back from the main dealers who refused to do anything except wanting to fit a brand new DPF, I tried what Craig said when I got home.

Sadly hard resetting the battery made no difference. I tried 3 times and each time when reconnected the car went straight back into the RED DPF message and limp home mode so impossible to do a passive regen. Sad

Cant find any DPF cleaning specialists near me so I think I'll see how easy it is to take it off myself and courier it to one. If it's not an easy job then I may have to bite the bullet. Sad no - holiday for the kids this year Big Cry

Well, how naiive was I??

I thought the DPF box (blue circle) would be just a stand alone "part" of the exhaust system that you unbolted and hey presto - replace or get cleaned at your pleasure.

No.

Apart from the red crossed out bit, it's a complete exhaust replacement!!!!!! - its all one welded joined up piece all the way to and including the back kbox and tail pipes !! Evil or Very Mad

Complexity wise - Not beyond any competent person with a spanner to remove (apart from typical corroded nut/bolts on the flange may need cutting off).....but not a one man (due to weight) job with just the clearance under the car (down pipes) to remove on the driveway.

Censored

Have you considered taking it on a flatbed to get it cleaned?? G reg 2.5VM Vogue Portofino red 1991- 1999

I'm not able to check this myself at the moment, and don't know if it's possible, but can the IID tool force the car to do a regeneration cycle?

I have diagnostics for other cars which allow this to happen. It does disturb the neighbours though as it runs the engine at 3000rpm for 20 minutes...... Shocked Shocked

Might at least allow you to drive it to somewhere where you can have the DPF cleaned. 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography

Having now read that the whole exhaust system including cat, DPF , and rear silencer are made from stainless steel, I can now see where the £2500 replacement price comes from, but surely it also makes more sense to get it cleaned somehow?? G reg 2.5VM Vogue Portofino red 1991- 1999

Thanks Stan - as mobile, they can only trigger an active regeneration the same as LR tried but failed. Passive or active regeneration can only clear soot built up. The problem is not soot but soot that has previously failed to burn then becomes ash. The ash then collects in the DPF which can't be burnt off so the DPF has to be removed from the car if cleaning is to be successful and even then apparently there is no guarantee.

Even the mobile guys say the DPF has to be removed and sent off to be deep cleaned to get rid of the ash at this stage.

Well, now I've just uncovered something that may change this.
Yes - as I found out this morning, from new manufacture, the DPF is part of an "all in one" exhaust. But having just read the second page of what you attached earlier Blue, it would seem (I'm waiting for duckworth Dan to confirm) , that replacement DPFs may not include a full system. You actually have to CUT out the centre section of the old DPF/system, mount the new DPF and pipe and fasten at each end with Sleeves and clamps. mmmmmmmm Confused
