They were a trial and the vast majority were given to LR Managers to begin with, hence the S/H ones available. They were dropped because something new is on the way. The Tesla guys have been at Gaydon for some time now but that's all the info I can glean.

Apparently the new factory they're building, and the majority of the staff they're advertising for will be for a new battery plant ?? Could be they're going to build batteries for Tesla for the European market. Wonder if Tesla have some new and secret battery design coming out?

I think Tesla are leading the way in battery technology at the moment though, they spend millions on development. Can't see JLR investing a whole new factory and 5000 staff in electric as it stands in the uk and Europe at the moment. Unless that is, they know something we don't regarding regulations, tax and fuel prices.

There's a lot to like about the XC90, but it's essentially a tall estate car. Doesn't ride well, even on air suspension, and suffers from pretty awful road/tyre noise (on 20" wheels, at least) which completely spoils the refinement (there's little wind noise, rattly 4 cylinder diesel is quiet at cruise). Witnessed quite a few (minor, but annoying) software/electronic glitches too. The interior is good, and materials aren't bad, but it doesn't feel special.

Prefer the V90 Cross Country (which is essentially the same car, minus "SUV" pretensions).

My issue is that I have a MY14 4.4 SDV8 L405. I'd like to update it. No point in buying something less than a MY17 as there'd be no uplift.

If I buy a MY17 with the new Satnav screen, it will depreciate like hell when the MY18 comes out.

I probably ought to wait a year or two into the MY18 to get a decent discount and see how the hybrid gets received.

So a RR is probably off the menu.

I could get a Velar for two years. But it isn't big enough.

I could get the latest Disco. But that asymmetric rear tailgate does my head in.

So what to fill the gap with? Ideally that is a PHEV?

This could be the answer for you , Euro 6 so no toxic charge for London and looks good value . Put it on a 2 year PCP and when the new range arrives you can move into one of them without too much financial pain.

From my conversations, discounts would be no different, 17MY or 18MY - it's not the sort of facelift which is going to generate huge waiting lists.

Hmm. Maybe. But:
* has the old satnav screen so not a major change to mine
* has the executive seating
* black (I don't do black cars) but perhaps Farallon is a dark blue
* not a PHEV (but it is a hybrid)

Farallon is blue . New 17 sat nav is hardly any better still no Google maps , the only feature worth having is that the radio doesn't go off until you open the door just like a BMW . Hybrid can be very fuel efficient ( for a 2.4 ton truck ) I can see some trips of 40 MPG and fluke ones of over 60 MPG when you max the EV button but that's rare to get that .

They confirmed at the IAA at Frankfurt that the new PHEV L405 will have the 2.0 Ingenium petrol engine with 300hp, plus a 100hp electrical engine. So thats similar to the Volvo XC90 T8. I would have prefrerred that LR had put more power in the new PHEV, more like the new Cayenne e-Hybrid that will get the same hybrid module as the Panamera (330 hp 6-cyl petrol plus 136hp electric motor - total of 462hp).
Driving the L405 in full EV mode in the city with only 100hp available doesn't seem very attempting....

But you'll have max torque from 0 rpm.

L405 PHEV

I've been thinking of ordering one but the Autocar comments ref trying to get a 4 cylinder, with not a lot of torque, to effectively move a 2 tonne+ mammoth when no battery available kills it for me.

I visited a LR dealer (big one in Edinburgh) and asked what they thought the electric range would be given that the number given in LR literature is 30 miles but using the outdated and very silly present system. Their guess was less than 20 miles.

That and 'no real go' when battery exhausted and probably terrible mpg if you push it is the end for me.

I've just got 31 mpg on a 1100 mile run with wife's SDV8. 2016 Vogue SDV8

I think the idea is not to exhaust the battery, allow it to be topped up with the regenerative braking, then you'll always have some electric power for the odd spurt when required.

I must admit I like the whole concept. Just wish it was a 6 cylinder engine instead of a 4.
