L405 replacement windscreen

Our insurance company uses Nationwide who advise they would routinely use a Pilkington replacement screen, so without the Range Rover markings.

Should I insist on one with RR markings, even if at extra cost to 'the claimant'?

Thanks.

I just went with Pilkngton and fitted by AutoGlass

I guess it depends on how much the extra cost to you would be - and who would fit it - not sure who does it for a main dealer but I'd want a windscreen specialist rather than a generalist following the instructions.......

Be very careful; check the glass before it's fitted. It's saves them a lot of cash to substitute to a brand that you've never heard of and all windscreens are not created equal!

Very true, what I meant was beware the last minute switch to the Korean or Chinese brand that you've never heard of.

I was looking at a 2017 405 recently (a demonstrator at a dealer) and noted that the glass was no longer labelled "Pilkington" but a far eastern looking name (I have forgotten what). Pilkington (the company) was taken over by a Japanese glass maker I think and perhaps that is their name, or the trade name of their products generally. So a name other than Pilkington on the glass may not indicate that it is not equivalent to what is used at the Solihull factory. When my screen was replaced (Autoglass) I was assured that the screen was exactly as used at Solihull, maybe that is what one should ask for. Only Range Rovers since 1988

Pilkington was taken over by Japan's Nippon Sheet Glass (NSG) in 2006.

If it wasn't labeled as NSG, it was a substitute from a third party manufacturer. The replacement windscreen business is renowned for it along with the line "it all comes out of the same factory", which it really, really doesn't!

Beware, the third party glass often comes with problems such as sensors for rain sensing wipers and auto dimming headlamps no longer working, or not featuring the same "Opticool" capability, which keeps your car cool on a hot day.

Well, fate has intervened.

The windscreen company has experienced difficulty finalising the windscreen type and so are today ordering a genuine Range Rover one and will only charge the standard windscreen excess amount which I think is £100.

It really annoys me when you have to brace yourself for a whole series of "discussions" with either the windscreen supplier or your insurers to make sure you aren't fobbed off with a non-original screen.

My main annoyance is that the insurance companies will happily trot out the "it's an expensive vehicle to repair Sir, which is why your quote is £xyz" and then try and coerce you into an inferior product. They will, of course, have already factored into your quote that it will cost them more to repair so why not just instruct a genuine replacement without the hassle.

Perhaps I'm missing the point..........oh of course now I get it, it's all about making money........doh.... Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

When I needed a new screen for my L322 when it was still under warranty I asked the windscreen company to confirm that if they fitted a non-genuine part they would confirm in writing to me that they would meet any rejected warranty claims due to fitting non-genuine parts.

They agreed to fit a genuine LR screen!
