excuse my ignorance but am I correct in assuming that a 2012 L322 4.4 has a DPF?
I checked my oil and it asked me to add 1 litre and refer to the handbook for type, having done so I am still stuck, any assistance greatly appreciated.....If someone could recommend a product even better....Thanks I need more help than most...sorry !!

Thanks for the reply, I might have to go to Halfords as it is really low. What is weird is the differences when you are searching shops, some say use semi-synthetic, some say full... very confusing for amateurs like me...

Just a tip,
Make sure the car is dead level when you use the electronic oil level gauge. Any small incline "drastically " affects the reading.
My drive is not level and it reads half full if I check it there, but full as soon as I check it on level ground.

Ditto for checking on level ground. My 4.4 TDV8 uses no oil at all between services. I once checked it in a slight incline and it was if the scale as low on the check screen. Double check first, best not to over fill

There is no dipstick. The electronic gauge reads in whole units, so can exaggerate compared with a dipstick where you see the exact position. I agree with the comments earlier about the importance of doing the check on level ground, the temperature of the oil seems to make a difference too.

The oil recommended by LR is Castrol Edge, I think it is 5W30, but you should check, either in your handbook or on the LR website where you can consult the handbook online. Only Range Rovers since 1988

is your car losing oil? seams alloth oil to add between oil changes. as BB and Webbie have mentioned level ground and oil at working temperature. otherwise you may overfill.

This is confusing, last night I did a check and it was nearly "low" and said add a litre of oil, I tried it again this morning and it said it was now low and I should add 1.5 litres of oil, I am on my way to Halfords to buy some but wanted to ask what a safe amount of oil would be to put in in case the gauge is faulty...should I follow the instructions of what the car asks for ? I can't see any leakage of oil anywhere so I am assuming it may have been low since the last service and I haven't checked it for a long while, slap wrists...

I assume there is no other way of checking the levels as there is no dipstick now....

Again, any advice welcome to this amateur..!!

is the oil at the min. now,? if it is i would add 1 liter, start and stop the engine . weit 15-20min and check oil.
i like my oil level to be (with the engine cold) at the middle or one notch above middle mark.

Hmm, the different readings could be due to oil temperature if the car is in the same position. You might want to put the car on the high suspension setting and slide underneath it (ideally wearing eye protection) and have a look around to see if there is any sign of an oil leak. If you had lost half a litre overnight one would have expected to see something on the ground.

If you do want to top it up I would put in a little at a time, rather than the whole litre or whatever, let it settle and see what it does to the indicated level. It's not good to overfill, and easier to add oil than to take it out again. As mentioned above filling to maybe three quarters up the acceptable range rather than to the top of that range might be better. If readings are erratic and it is not due to the car being at a different angle or different oil temperature (or visible leak) then it might be worth a diagnostic check of the sensor etc. Only Range Rovers since 1988

NIGHTMARE !!! I found a level place checked 4 times and it said add 1.5 litres and was showing low. Went to a helpful Halfords who assisted me ( as I am rubbish with cars ) and after about 30 mins agreed that the oil is low..Added 1 litre as advised by Nino_Nino as apposed to 4 litres and the marker went up and said add .5 of a litre..That sort of made sense so I thought I would monitor it...later this evening went for a run in the car, found a level place to check and the level is now right at the top of FULL but the display says oil level ok...

Do you think I should take some oil out or is it ok to show full ?
Do you think the guage is faulty or as some people have said it is extremely sensitive but surely not to that degree..

check oil in the morning with engine cold, it should not be more than one notch over middle. if it is, vacum some out.

owners manual says that the oil must be hot, ie running temperature and engine to be switched off for 15 minutes to let the oil drain back into the sump.. ... - .- -.
