Thanks Mike.

Just had a read of that section of the manual.
So a device with the maps on gets plugged into the firewire socket, and an unlock code gets entered into an update screen on the head unit.

I did have a rummage about in my boot tonight, see if I could see anything nav related. There is a sticker but it's on what looks like the sub woofer.
I therefore assume the hard drive is in the head unit.

If it was easier to get out I would be tempted to have a look inside the unit and examine the content of the drive. I doubt very much if it's encypted, but could be an odd format I suppose. Too many toys, not enough time

I'm sure that someone posted that the HD was in the dash near the monitor.

The wiring diagrams don't show a remotely-attached HD that I would expect to be documented if wires were run to the rear, suggesting that the HD is plugged directly into the monitor.

That may be true Graeme.
Don't forget though that all the audio/video devices communicate over the MOST optical bus.
The older systems use a dvd unit that is remotely located (lhs of boot). The head unit just loadsthetilesof maps for the zone it is in, or for the selected route.

I have done a bit more researching this evening.
The maps come from navteq (now called HERE), and the unlock code is theirs, not land rovers.
It appears you have to submit the vehicles vin and the map serial no to get an unlock code.
On other devices that use navteq maps it is possible to use alternate map sets, so I am looking into this.
If I get anywhere I will report back. Too many toys, not enough time

I must get back to my task of connecting the Firewire socket to a PC with a Firewire port to see if the HDD can be read. A USB A plug with the metal shield removed fits into the FW socket but I haven't tested the connection yet. Removing the HDD might reveal an alternate connection socket on the drive.

Thanks Mike.
I have been out to the car this morning and been through all the diagnostics menus.

The HDD information tells me it is a Hitachi HEJ425040F9AT00
https://www.hdsentinel.com/storageinfo_det...5040F9AT00

2.5" 40GB U-ata drive. This is a parallel interface, so I expect it to be within the head unit.

I have no doubt I could read the content of the drive.
The issue is likely to be how the firmware reads and uses the mapping data, and just how the unlock code affects things (eg is the code checked on every startup, is it a crc / hash of the data, or what)

I'm not prepared to pull my dash apart and potentially Censored the unit at the moment.
If I had access to a spare unit that doesnt matter if it gets broken I could pull it apart, see what we can do.

Incidentally I understand the later versions of HERE map sets don't need a code in the same way.
Also, other car makers offer free continuous map updates, so wonder if one of these might work on our head unit...

Still more questions than answers I'm afraid. Too many toys, not enough time

OK guys I will take a look later, I did see there were some on there around the 250 mark.

My background is software and electonics, consulting to the space, defence, and transport sectors.
There are a whole host of things it would be good to know, which having a device would enable investigation.
Given that this is off topic now probably worth starting a new thread.

Cheers,
John. Too many toys, not enough time

Hi guys,

- Yes I'd pop some money in a SatNav fund
- The HDD is integrated into the main screen unit (see below)
- The plug is behind the glovebox somewhere, there is a pic below but no exact location.

 Cheers, Greg

This is the cheapest one I can find on for £199 but it's also 'make offer' so maybe less.
