Engine System Fault??

Well barely 12 hrs into RR ownership and we have our first problem. Was on way to work at 60ish mph, pulled out to pass a lorry. Tickled the throttle and "bong" lost power with engine system fault. Managed to pull over and stop - restarted and all was well. Has happened 2 - 3 times since - always at low throttle, not gunning it. Have to say it seems to on wet / very damp start ups. Had the codes read today:
P0196, P023D & P1623.
I believe the middle one of these refers to the MAP sensor signal - I think this is saying that the signal is not consistant with the engine speed/load/turbo actuator position. Possible causes:
1.MAP sensor faulty/covered in crap
2.Turbo actuator sticking
3.Air leak on pressure side
The vehicle is an '08 TDV8 and on the whole am very impressed with it but this issue has caused me to lose the faith somewhat. Any comments on my diagnosis much appreciated.
Phil.

Start with split turbo hoses and go from there.

Take off the 2 top hoses, dead easy, and check for splits, esp under the webbing on he RHS hose.

Have a search and a look in the wiki. I did a how to take them off. 5 min job. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Hi Phil
Have a look at my thread here http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/topic44256.html which is about a similar problem I encountered with my engine a few weeks ago. Hopefully it might help.

Cheers
Andy

Hi Andy,

Thanks for that - a good read and a nice fix.
To be honest I had 3 - 4 failures in the first week of ownership but after that it's been ok (3 weeks in now).
The failures I experienced were all under minimal load which makes me suspect the actuator that adjusts the turbo geometry. I have clocked up a few miles now so maybe one was sticking slightly causing an issue with the MAP reading??
So will have to see how it goes.

Thanks again,
Phil.

Hi Phil

When I took it initially to Keith Gott in Hampshire, the tech was able to operate the turbo actuators using his diagnostic kit which was plugged in and he could 'see' the actuators moving correctly. Sorry, but I don't know what kit he was using.

Andy
