Tyres L405

I’m about 4 weeks into a 63 L405 AB 3.0. It has 22” turbine wheels with Continental Cross Contact LX Sport 274 40 22 tyres.

After a few long journeys the road noise from the tyres are making me wish I’d stuck with my L322. I accept that the ride will be a little harsher and that pot holes will be more severe with low profiles etc... however at 70/80 mph the noise which is amplified from the tyres is bordering on unbearable.

I have the exact tyre pressure as per manufacture instructions. This is a one owner vehicle with only 18000 miles covered. I presumed at purchase that the wheels and tyres would have been factory fit.

Is this issue just the way it is with these vehicles or could the wheels and tyres have been retro fit therefore the car not set up right for these wheels and tyres. Should i be looking to change the tyres or even looking at 21” wheels and tyres?

I would appreciate any thoughts or experiences you may have had with your FFRR and wheel/tyre issues.

Hi. Also had several L322s and switched to 2013 L405 with 22 turbines with Contis. I agree. Road noise is very loud especially on certain surfaces and once you are tuned into it is all you can here. Based on tyre wear its clear that my tracking is out and has been for some time so I have put my noise down to poor tyre wear. Once a tyre has worn noisy there is no going back. I have recently had the tracking done. I swear it's quieter but still not acceptable. Therefore I assume I won't fix this until time to change my tyres. I have always liked the pirellis on the L322 so has intended to move to these in the hope they are quieter. Also noted that you can buy contis which are called 'silent' which are supposed to be 9db quieter than standard tyres through the use of foam stuck on the inside of the tyre. I had wondered if these are fitted to the RR as standard and then someone has fitted the non silent version to my car. Can anyone confirm if they have foam in their Contis from the factory? 2013 L405 AB 4.4SDV8 Luxor/Ivory, 2007 Vogue TDV8 Epson Green/Sand, 2008 Vogue TDV8 Buckingham Blue/Sand, 2003 Vogue 4.4 LPG Epsom Green/Sage, 1998 Vogue SE 4.6 LPG Epsom Green/Cream

Factory fit are conti silent - there is a regular conti the same size, though I have no idea how much noisier they are.

I didn't notice any material difference from my L322 with 20" Diamaris to the L405 with contis

Our L405 has genuine 22" wheels with Continental LX Sport tyres. Not noticed adverse road noise or a compromised ride.

3 out of the 4 tyres are 'normal' and one is silent with the foam in (bought a new tyre since getting the car).

If you check the DOT stamp on the side of your tyre wall Tomo, it might give an indication as to whether or not you are on original tyres based upon the tyre year of manufacture and the week the tyres were produced.

Here is a sample of a DOT stamp if that assists Thumbs Up

My mate has a three month old 405 with 22s which are significantly louder than my 15 plate with 21s . I love the 22s but love the ride quality of the 21s more .

My local dealer basically told me not to spec 22's on my AB as he felt that the ride is better on 20's and the 21 was a good compromise between the looks of the 22s and ride of the 20s.

I've not experienced the 22s, as I followed his advice (having had 4 cars from the guy over the past 10 years) as I thought he'd know more than me!

Thought it was an interesting comment from him though ....

I have two sets of 21s (summer and winter) and 20s (offroad).

I've driven 22s. I don't like them - they look great but the ride is definitely harsher.

I think the 21s are the best compromise.

The 20s are great. I have slightly wider tyres than standard so roadholding is fine (but you notice the lack of tyrewall stiffness).

Thanks for all the replies.

As pointed out with the image my tyres are indeed the originals. I am going to stick with them and will look at the silents when ready for replacing. I cant bring myself to change the wheels as i like them to much. Its only higher speeds where it impacts, i guess it will slow me down. Thumbs Up
