Lifting

If you could only have 1 for the self-maintenance of your FF, which would you prefer in your garage and why: 4 post or 2 post lift? __

6 feet deep pit, full length of car .
I had one in my last garage and I miss it every time I need to work under my car.
I made 2 sliding jacking boards and it was so easy to take all 4 wheels off at the same time and feel 100% safe when working underneath.

My brother. who was a fully qualified time served mechanic/ fitter said many times that he had repaired more cars in my garage than he had done at work.
He also rebuilt his LWB series 2A Onto a new galvanised chassis and bulkhead. 😂😂 happy days!!. G reg 2.5VM Vogue Portofino red 1991- 1999

I have a 4 post 4t ramp, works well. Don't like 2 posters, never seem safe .

Quite a mix of answers here....

I've been told the 2 poster is more versatile.... __

Opinions are one thing, experience is another.....

TBH, with both Craig & Mikey (who do this for a living) saying 2 posts - my next question would be 'how much do I need to spend on a decent 2 post lift ? and is that significantly more than a decent 4 post lift ?'

They both have their place. The garage I use (Mate's place) has 3 lifts.

A 4 poster which is best for big stuff such as welding or pulling dents etc. Having the car sat on 4 wheels keeps thing s straight and you would never manage to pull it off the ramp.

The 2 poster is best for general servicing as access is really good and all the wheels are already off teh ground come brake pad time.

He also has a 1 post portable lift which lifts from one side, kind of like a fork lift would. Yeah, bizarre I know but daft as it sounds it's dead handy for stuff outside like steam cleaning, applying Dinitrol or Waxoyl etc. I thought it looked dreadfully unstable and risky to use but the reality is that it's equally as good as the 2 post lift although I really wouldn't fancy big stuff with it such as removing a gearbox to replace a clutch etc. All CE rated as well, just that my human instincts still tell me to leave it the f&*ck alone Laughing

Personally, if I could only have one it would be the 2 post unit as it is the most versatile. As with anything buy a good one which is rated to cope with the weight easily, i.e. 4T upwards. Don't buy cheap junk, a well known make with a good warranty and all the approvals in place. Again, speaking personally I wouldn't have a secondhand one either. Remember that with such things you only have to be unlucky once.

EDIT. The 2 post one I use is a Bradbury. Electro-hydraulic. Very good indeed.

How do you know some who say 4 post don't do it for a living? The other good thing about 4 post is you have an adjustable height work bench for bikes, quads, general fabbing etc. At the moment on our 4 poster there's a Chinese scooter on the one platform and a Honda 300 quad frame on the other. Do that on a 2 poster !! Laughing Laughing
