Engine Management light and hissing sound, 4.2 S/C

Evening guys, new problem today.

I took the FF 4.2 S/C for an MOT today (simple enough eh?) However its now broken...

It was fine when it went in! However on collecting it after the test it now has the engine management (orange) light on. The car feels very slow but it does sound OK. Throttle response is pretty poor also.

There wasn't a huge amount of fuel in her (90 mile range, no reserve light) so I've stuck £60 in just incase but its not helped.

When I got it home and opened the bonnet I could hear a hissing/vacuum like sound coming from under the plastic cover. The symptoms do feel like unmetered air getting into the inlet system.

I now know how to get the pollen filter housing and the engine cover off ... (lets start simple eh!)

Has anyone got any pointers of what might be causing this trouble from under the cover? Or am I barking up the wrong tree? 2005 E60 M5

Sounds maybe like a leak in the intake system. Take the engine cover off and see if you can pinpoint where the noise is coming from.

That is where I was thinking, I'm thinking it should be fairly easy to find!

Can I just check, if any other S/C owners are reading a fairly loud hissing under the bonnet is not normal? 2005 E60 M5

Not on mine it's not. Unless I'm full throttle accelerating, then it makes a nice screaming noise.

Great stuff, thanks for that. Will try and investigate in the next few days - annoying really as I wanted to use it tomorrow but looks like we'll be in the pickup again! 2005 E60 M5

reads like you've split a boost hose to me or could easily have just popped off , as the others have suggested already , I reckon it will be obvs once you are under the bonnet

Hissing or sucking?

Need the cover off and listening around the various areas of the engine bay. A good tip would be a flexible tube plugged into your ear and the other end moved around the joins ... That will pin point the sound much better. V8 or else ...

I had an air intake/leak noise under WOT that sounded like it came from behind the glovebox that was a split hose underneath the throttle body. I had no EML and no faults stored but lack of power and fuel consumption was less than 200 miles to a full tank.

Took LR three weeks to find and fix and only after someone on here was helping me with ideas as they were replacing their supercharger on their car did we find it. Two smoke tests and a lot of patience got to the bottom of it.

Fixed and perfect now. When mine started I heard two or three almost banging noises and then an air leak noise when I was under WOT. Yours would have been under load for MOT test...

Good luck Alex

It sounds like I'm looking in the right direction then. I've a friend who's going to pop round with a snap on diagnostic tool to get some codes out of it and see whats going on.

I'm going to try and take it to bits this evening and have a look after little man has gone to bed, can't do much with him "helping" 2005 E60 M5

I managed to get 15 minutes on it today. Took the engine covers off and found a fairly big air leak on the pcv valve. So I'm going to start there, I've found reference to someone with similar symptoms and it was the pcv valve So it's got to be worth a try!

I've asked for a price from duckworths and will go from there! 2005 E60 M5

I have a new PCV valve on its way from Duckworths so I'm going to start there. Have you identified where the air leak is on yours? 2005 E60 M5

My air leak sounds like it’s coming from the back of the engine on the same side as the pcv valve. I have also changed the pvc valve but the leak is still there!.
I have also changed the inlet gasket as I read that this can cause the same problem but it’s not cured the problem
