Bought a Model X for the wife

Just bought a Model X. Seven seats. Big whale of a thing. Really shifts. Lots of tech. Poor build quality. Same price as a Rangie.

An interesting choice. Watching the Model 3 with baited breath for a potential 2019 car when Swmbo current car is due back.

I’m personally not convinced about the practicality of the gull wing doors in multi storey car parks. Would be interested in hearing your thoughts after a couple of months, re range, build quality and so on.

Thumbs Up

Right now I would stay that Tesla couldn't organise a panic in a doomed submarine. The worst purchase experience that I've had in 30 years of buying cars. Ignored, insulted, ripped off, lied to, given a substandard car. Every time I thought it could possibly get worse, they managed it.

Build quality is patchy but if you complain, they look at you like you're mad and the fanboys online tell you that you aren't the right sort of customer (there is a Tesla cult out there that you need to buy into if you are going to venture onto their forums). I think the problem is that their customer people are like the Apple shop people - young, enthusiastic and charming but not possessing even the first clue.

The "falcon wing" doors are rather ridiculous and, having been clonked on the head by one as it cam down, could do with more sensors.

Range is showing at 254miles on my 100D (for daily use - you can opt to max out the battery for a longer trip). My wife does 15-50 miles a day and we have the Rangie for long distances, so I think we'll rarely trouble the battery. However, I have free supercharging for life so I'm tempted to try a trip to France or somewhere to see what its like.

It does go like a stabbed rat, even without Ludicrous Mode.

Had a test drive in one , game changer definitely but agree regards build quality, especially at the price . Pulls like a big litre bike though, had my 4 year old giggling with the thrust.

Interesting. Love to hear your thoughts after living with it for a few months.

Also interested in how Tesla will get on. They’re burning through money at a prodigious rate and can’t seem to produce a Model 3 at an acceptable rate. It’s fine to make cars by hand if you’re Rolls Royce or Morgan, but you can’t make a $35,000 mass market car by hand.

What puts me off is the whole 'apple' like messiah thing and the fact that in a few years the tech will move on so much you'll be looking at computer like depreciation.

Otherwise, I like the idea.

Do you get wet when you open the doors when it's rainging?

Now that ^^^^^^^^is an interesting observation. I wonder whether the depreciation curve will look more like computers, TVs etc than traditional cars...never occurred to me before!

I think it would take a step-change in battery technology to do that. Old cars have outmoded tech. They still get bought.

There was a step change with the prius when they went from NiMH to lithium ion, and the old ones still trade.

The next step change is solid state, but you'd probably have traded yours before that comes along.

I think it would be more of a concern if they made hydrogen fuel cell technology more accessible and built out the infrastructure for that. Li-ion batteries might turn out to be a dead end in the electrification of cars. But equally it might be a "VHS vs. Betamax" moment where the weaker technology wins out because it builds a critical mass of users faster.

Indeed....says the guy who bought a System 2000 because it was technically superior to both VHS and Betamax Big Cry

I think Tesla is a real risk longer term though.

They need to learn how to build cars, infrastructure and customer loyalty before the traditional manufacturers learn how to build electric cars. The big boys are getting there quickly. Tesla, not so much.

Did I read somewhere that Tesla engineers have been working with JLR for over a year on electric car technology?? 2017 4.4 SDV8 Autobiography

Exactly that - it's obviously easier to buy/develop battery and electric motor technology than the myriad other things that go with a "premium" car manufacturer. Sure the Porsche Mission E will cause problems for the Model S, and that's just the start.
