It’s a long way if you take the ferry to Bilboa/ Santander then drive down to the Algarve.

I can recommend a very pleasant free route which takes in the jewel of Portugal , The Duoro Valley, if anyone wants it, but I am not a caravaner so sorry I don’t know about free overnight camp sites. G reg 2.5VM Vogue Portofino red 1991- 1999

It’s taken me 4 weeks to get my wife to agree to come in the car next year Stan.

The point of the route is that the Camper Parking is free at the stop off locations so no spend on campsites should anybody fancy this when they have time/retire!

I have not done it (yet), by the way, but got the info from a Full Timing Blog

A word of advice for anyone driving in Portugal.
Avoid ALL Portuguese toll roads if you can.
They are ridiculously expensive and there’s usually a decent A class road running parallel.
I tend to follow the coast roads , which are free and pretty quiet during the off peak times (Sept/ Oct) when I visit.

I guess if you were really trying to pinch you could use the adjacent A road for that stretch
