i placed an item on gumtree and listed my mobile number....i kept getting texts saying that they were interested in the item and could i contact back on an email address..
why would they do that when they are already communicating with me via text..

if i respond to their email, does my email go onto a database or is there something more sinister...

thoughts? ... - .- -.

it will start when they get your email pal , probably an offer to buy without viewing etc etc

...or they have a great uncle who's left an inheritance of US$5,000,000,000 but they need 'help' access it

There could be a few reasons they would want to know your email address.

They could suspect it is the same email that you use to login to Gumtree / Google / Facebook. They might try force a login to your account with common passwords and then take control of it. So many people still use Password / 12345 / Orange it is frightening. Or it could be as simple as they will auto read your email header and then sell the information on in bulk along with others obtained in the same way for....marketing??.


I'm always weary of texting back numbers I don't know incase it is a premium rate number.
