I am betting that 99.9999 of the oil coolers did not need replacing. I hade unit in my hands, and it is well made sturdy piece of aluminum casting. it is gaskets that need replacing at 15 quid for two. it would be nice if somebody with leak can mark the cooler and check afterwords if it was replaced with new one. I get realy pist off whan we are taken advantage off by unscrupulous tugs.
sorry for venting steam off.

Thats how mine was spotted with oil in the coolant system i was expecting headgaskets and huge bills and my indy said no its quite a common problem . Its a bit like the gearbox flush most wont change the filter and as my guy said whats the point all new fluids and a crappy old filter and next job when we get back is the turbo oil feed mod bit as its not smoking i was told to leave for now

I agree Nino, most oil coolers will not need replacing, but if you work out the time it took us to split the cooler, clean it all up, replace the gasket then reinstall it, the cost for main stealers time would probably exceed the cost of replacing a whole cooler.

Besides, let's face it, most stealers may not have anyone with the mechanical skills to carry out such work........most are "component" replacers only!

Has anyone determined why the gaskets leak? Are the bolts not tight enough possibly due to being undersized, have been over-tightened resulting in a distorted cooler, the gasket material is unsuitable or due to some other reason? I'm not keen to be replacing gaskets every 3 years so am looking for a longer lasting fix.

Can anyone advise the bolt tightening torque?

Thanks Mike and Nino.

Gaskets don't normally fail so regularly after such short distances and times so something is amiss. I'm quite astounded that neither the housing nor the gaskets have been revised but perhaps the bolt tightening torque has been increased. I will be attempting to discover the reason for mine leaking and taking steps to prevent it re-occurring.

I think I read the housing is plastic, could that be something to do with it? Temperatures perhaps?

Maybe on the SDV8 they have revised it?

. Cheers, Greg

I had my cooler gasket replaced by Rovertune in Reading for around £350 - it's 2.5 hours labour plus the gasket, and oil and coolant top-up as well. Dealers quoting around £1000 is strange.
I think it's just another one of those service items (like suspension bushes) that you get with these cars. But it must have a root cause, as GraemeS suggests.

LRDirect usually shows superseding part numbers if a component or gasket has been upgraded but none show for the cooler or the gaskets. However if a later version of the engine has different mountings or coolant or oil ways for a different cooler then the later cooler wouldn't be applicable to the earlier engines so not a superseding part. That the lower rubber style gasket sits totally within a groove with metal to metal clamping rather than clamped between faces allows the opportunity of the gasket being just thick enough to seal when new without any reserve as the gasket shrinks with age. However that doesn't explain why sometimes the middle gasket fails although I have not seen any pictures of that gasket as it was not initially available as a replacement part.

I have a 2-24nm torque wrench so will check the bolt torque before undoing the bolts, starting with a low torque then increasing until the bolt moves to determine if the bolts are not at their correct torque. If I find after loosening the bolts that the housing rests totally on the block rather than supported by the gasket then the gasket will have shrunk so will put a silicone bead in the housing groove before installing the new gasket. Currently I don't know from which gasket mine is leaking but there is no oil in the coolant bottle so perhaps leaking from the upper gasket. It is leaking rather badly with lots of oil under the gearbox which wasn't there 2 weeks ago.

PS Pictures of the housing suggest alloy construction.
PPS The upper gasket is of the same type as the lower gasket so also has the opportunity of being too thin, like an undersized o-ring.

Does anyone have a copy of LTB00785 which reportedly addresses this issue?

LTB00785v2 was issued April 18 noting updated model and VIN range, parts and service procedures.

PS. It looks as though the cooler to filter housing gasket becoming available might be the result of the TSB and therefore that gasket may be an improvement on the original which was not available as a replacement part. The TSB hopefully will confirm this thought.

Yes. I bought the 3yo car with 19K kms 3 years ago and its now just over 80K kms, which is less PA than my usual travels of around 30K PA.
