Strange problem.. Brake lights come on & key won't turn

Hi there,

I'm new here and was hoping I could get a bit of expert help. Would be very appreciative if I could be pointed in the right direction...

I went out to the car (2003 4.4 L322) this morning and the brake lights were on. These were the only lights and I hadn't left any lights on (checked dash).

Went to start her up and the key wouldn't turn in the ignition.

I've since disconnected the battery and reconnected and got her started... But within 5 minutes of turning off and locking the same thing happens again. (Brake lights come on and key won't turn)

I've been messing about all day both online (help articles etc.) and at the car and only on one occasion I've managed to turn the key and start her while the brake lights are on.

The transponder seems to be working the steering column as I can hear the click each time the key is inserted, and once I've got her started after a battery disconnect I can take the key out fully and then start her back up continually without problems as long as I don't leave it long enough for the brake lights to come back on.

The problems seem to start once the key has been completely removed and left for about 5 minutes. This is when the brake lights come on automatically and I need to do another battery disconnect to get it started again.

Can anyone help? I'm going crazy!

Would a faulty brake switch cause the key not to turn in the ignition?

Have you checked the battery voltage when it's in "fault mode"?

Update...

I took the plastic panel off which covers the LCM, expecting to find moisture/water. Couldn't see or feel anything but decided to attack it with a hairdryer regardless. Left it running on low heat for around 10 minutes and lo and behold everything has returned to normal.

Before doing this I did order a new ignition switch online. I guess it'll go in my spares box until required.

Thanks for the help guys.
