EGR?

Now that the weather is getting colder, I have started getting the MIL light on the dash when first starting. Using search shows a couple of threads for the first code below, but nothing for the second.

IID is reading P0489-00(2F) = which is an EGR failure and P0670-13(2F) - which is a glow plug issue.

Testing live values demonstrated that one of the EGRs is working perfectly with demand and actual % following precisely. The other is showing that it is following demand, but a little erratically.

I believe that in our normal climate, the RR doesn't actually need the glow plugs for starting; but it may be that they are trying to come on in the cold weather so there could be a connection with the problem starting with the cold weather. The glow plug light comes on with the ignition and goes off when started. In truth, I have never bothered with waiting for the glowplugs on a diesel in the UK - I just get in and turn the key to start.

So I am suspecting the possibility of an EGR and it's getting too cold to do myself on the drive, so it comes down to replace by garage or simply have the EGRs mapped out??

I would take it out, checked for fatigue/intact, cleaned, ensure it closes and disable it. ______________________________

Strangely, the problem has disappeared after a few uses of the beast.

If I need to shell out the labour charges to remove and clean the EGRs, I might as well just replace them I guess...

If they’re working ok maybe go straight to disabling the EGRs. You could use some induction cleaner before hand. If you have an IID Tool it will indicate percentage open from memory. ______________________________

Just an update...

Using the IID live data facility, it would appear that one EGR is working perfectly. The demand and position sensors track absolutely spot on

On the other, the demand matches the first, but the actual is all over the place until the engine warms up - then it is spot on.

So perhaps a set of emulators is called for to leave both valves closed at all times.

Just to note, the beast has done over 170,000 miles with no evidence of previous EGR work

Further update.

One tankful of Shell super diesel later instead of Sainsbury's and all is working correctly again

Surely a tank full of super diesel woudnt cure it?..my iid tool says both egrs at 0% commanded. and position one is stuck at 5% and one stuck on 7% and the orange check engine light is on.car drives fine though but it's going in in Friday for new egr valves. 2009 Vogue SE Zermatt silver

Well Shell Ultra makes claims for 'cleaning' the engine - that's why they charge 8p/l more for it.

And most of those miles were at a *ahem* reasonable speed...

Anyway, the IID now shows that it is following obediently on both sides

When you use the IID tool does it show the actual position of the valves as 0% as when I use mine it registers the actual as 5% as a minimum but when I record them and pull the graphs they then show as low as 0% from this so not sure if they are only closing to max 5% or if this is the lowest figure the live value on the IID tool shows? Current 2007 TDV8 Vogue Buckingham Blue
