2002-2005MY Reversing Camera Retro-fit

Partly for me, partly for an addition to the WiKi... Can someone provide a comprehensive list of what is needed to retrofit the rear view camera?

What options for positioning are available? Does the mount for the 2005+ fit in the spoiler of a pre-2005? I've heard they can go in the numberplate light space? Wouldnt that look odd with only one light?

Thanks,

Dan

I posted a complete list and a wiring diagram or 2 (which should be copied and hosted at some location that we have control over if it's going in the wiki) in another thread a week or so ago. Prerequisite is a TV-module. These are available in analog form for next to nothing these days, tho, as everyone is switching to digital:

You either buy a kit with the cam/relay/harness for around GBP150 or you buy an NTSC cam on ebay for GBP25 and a relay from an auto parts store for GBP5 and make your harness. This cam works very well in a RR, BTW, although you do have to file a little metal inside the number-plate light slot Shocked .

The cam is wired into the TV module:

Pins 13 and 14 on the white plug are vid in. Pin 17 on the blue plug needs ground to switch, so what you do is this:

The coil in the relay is energized by the reverse light (pins 85 and 86 on the relay) and closes the contacts (pins 30 and 87) switching ground to the vid module. You can add the manual switch to gnd like this guy has too. That way you can see if someone is following much too closely. Or watch as you're being rear-ended at a traffic light. Or add another relay and switch between vid sources (such as a DVD player). Or...

Female connectors are avail for little money at BMW Part-No 61 13 0 005 197.

The camera pictured above is quite unobtrusive and replaces the light with an LED as well as adding the camera:

I don't have any pics of my own RR handy and I couldn't find any on the www with a quick search, but here's a Disco3 that shows how well it's hidden:

For the perfect install you have to replace the other plate light with an LED as well and program out the bulb test.

You can obviously also mount the cam under the spoiler as oem in the later models, but I wanted to be able to see my trailer hitch which isn't possible from above due to the slope of the upper tailgate.

Cams are available for even less than the link I posted. The entire install can even be done for around GBP15 with some searching and creative parts sourcing - and the work is the same as with the kit scarey posted to Razz
