Removing audio head unit

Hi all,

Any tips on where to start when trying to remove the audio head unit in the dash? Or at least get to the wiring.

I have a bad (intermittent) connection on the screen and also now on the right speaker channel which I think is more likely to be in the head unit rather than the DSP in the boot.

Err...... You do know the radio tuner is in the rear compartment of the car.
I might still be looking for the bad connection in the rear compartment before accessing the head unit. Thumbs Up

No I didn't know that.

So which box actually produces the right speaker channel? I have lost it on the radio and the CD player and I guess sat nav etc but I don't actually use that.

I have lost the entire right speaker so that is low, mid and tweeter.

The radio tuner is under the small floor panel in front of the rear recess. you need to lift the removable panel and then remove the panel tray below it.
The radio tuner is the silver box nearest to the front of the car and nearest the centre of the car ie in front of the tv tuner with the one large plug connector on the top.
The radio tuner also incorporates the system amp.
These cars usually suffer corrosion of the various components due to water ingress therefore I'd be inclined to work your way through all the plugs/sockets in the compartment one by one looking for signs of water damage.
You could initially start by looking at the other smaller plug on the top of the DSP with all the speaker cables on it.
It's also possible the DSP has internal water damage. Unfortunately they do suffer it.
Do one plug at a time and keep checking as you go along for any improvement in the sound output, you might strike lucky.
Tedious I'm afraid but anything you do will save doing it in the future.
One thing to look for particularly is when you remove a plug from a socket check that all the pins are still in the socket and that one hasn't broken off due to corrosion and is stuck in the plug.
This particularly applies to the pins in both of the smaller sockets, the speaker cables, on the DSP .

Thanks

Worked through all that, even removed the tuner and the DSP and had them apart on the bench. They look good with no sign of water damage.

Still the right channel does not work most of the time. sometimes works for a bit on start-up but then drops out after a variable amount of time.

Is there a schematic / wiring diagram for the audio system - I can't seem to find one in the manual.

Thanks NDFI

All received and I have had a scan through. It is a shame they don't actually say what function each wire has. I wanted to be able to follow the Right speaker channel through the wiring.

I'll keep struggling on

Update.

Pulled out the dash as well (I know now that the head unit is not actually responsible for producing the audio as the tuner and amp is in the boot) Wiggled stuff about but no joy there either. Worth a try I thought.

I suspect that something is wrong with the tuner / amp (BM54L322) or the wiring that connects it to the DSP.

Looked on eBay for BM54L322 - even if it's just to try for elimination purposes - a bit of a SHOCK on the going rate which seems to be £150 quid or so. One on there at £50 but it doesn't work!

I shall just drive with the left channel for a bit while I figure out what to do.

Thanks for all your help. 2004 4.4 V8 Vogue

Do you have the original telephone in your car and does it work?

No, It seems it was never fitted with the telephone option - just an aftermarket Parrot. 2004 4.4 V8 Vogue

Get the stage 2 bm54 amp upgrade from Baris. It will fix any channel issues on the original amp and double its output, along with better quality sound. Get in touch with him and have a chat.

The end sound result is cleaner than on the later cars with the so called better systems in.
