Seized pins in callipers extra six hours labour

Well the time had come to replace the Bremo front pads and discs on my 2012 4.4, 35K. I knew it was going to be an expensive job as I wanted to use original LR parts. I trust this work to my local indie, who has looked after the car for the last 4 years.
What should have turned out to be a straight forward job turned into a nightmare.
All four Bremo brake pad retaining pins had seized in the callipers. Andy the indie said in all the years he has been working on LR he has never experienced a situation like it. (as if they had been welded in). He wondered if it was due to car washers useing acid spray on the wheels. Anyway it needed the calipers coming off the car and onto the bench. It took a total of 6 hours to remove callipers, drill out the 4 hardened steel pins and clean the seats, refit and bleed the system. Big Cry He looked at the alternative, that was replacing the calipers but that was going to cost £671.03 each. Big Cry Big Cry
I think that's the difference between an indie and a main dealer who would have told me I needed two new callipers.
Moral of the storey is: don't let car washers use acid on your Ali wheels and brakes.

Apparently copper grease causes steel pins to seize in aluminium calipers?
I usually use a bit of white lithium grease.

I replaced mine (2011 with 50k miles) a couple of months ago and had exactly the same - what should have taken me a couple of hours at the most turned into a full weekend job to remove and drill out. Really pleased I didn't leave it to the dealer now....!

6 hours! OUCH!

For future reference if anyone else finds themselves in this predicament? Cut either side of the pin (CAREFULLY) with a dremmel or grinder & thin cutting blade then drive the stumps out with a drift... Easier to do still mounted on the car! Thumbs Up

Apparently he tried all sorts of ways to drift those pins out, they had to drill the pin a bit, split it and bend the sides in and out to break it and remove the pin, bit by bit as it was seized solid all the way down.
I hope blue baltics post is not right, because my indie told me he has put plenty of (I think) copper grease on the new pins. I will give him a call and see what he has to say. Whistle

I'm guessing you haven't seen just how seized these pins get. I did dremel, and using a drift to get them out with the calipers on the car or on the bench would not move them, it's like they have been welded into the calipers. Even drilling them out was a heck of a job.

Exactly what I did... didn’t cause me too much bother. Worrying about the copper grease comments as I greased them right up with slip.

I've read that copper grease isn't the best for in around the brake area due to it drying up with caliper temperatures and that it's better to use caliper / lithium grease stuff.

Next time im in around the calipers I might do a preventative loosen and refit of everything. V8 or else ...

Exactly the same happened with my last 4.4 TDV8 - and these were well and truly corroded solid - due to loads of salt on the the roads here. Main agent sorted for an additional 1 hours labour - cut the head and tails off the pins and a 20 ton bench press pushed them out with a drift.

An additional 6 hours labour seems to me to be an expensive £ generating excuse Sad 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17
