Towing advice... petrol vs diesel

Well after 12 years its time to retire the TD6, so I am enjoying the search, automatic reaction was a TDV8 however I have a hankering for a supercharged. My question to you lovely people is this, it will do minimal miles, approx 4/5K per year and 90% of that is towing a horse trailer 2 up. TD6 has done this perfectly, will a petrol be up to the job or should I stick with an oil burner??

Any input much appreciated Thumbs Up

capable towing is all down to torque,

the 3.6 diesel produces 630 Nm or 464 lb.ft @ 2000 rpm

the 5.0 petrol , 625 Nm or 460 lb.ft @ 2500-5500 rpm

so not a big difference...

go to a 4.4 tdv8 and its, 700 Nm or 516 lb.ft @ 1500-3000 rpm ... - .- -.

I moved cars on the trailer several times with my SC. The car never had a problem towing the trailer and never had a problem maintaining motorway speeds no matter the load. I'd say it was equally as capable as our TDV8's have been.

The only difference is the Supercharged car will be at higher revs as that's where it's power is. It's probably a bit more relaxing to tow in the TDV8 but I'd never of said it was a chore in the SC.

Thanks Guys

Stan, I know the stats but looking for real world advice ideally...

David, thanks for that, I am just concerned that towing approx 3 tonnes for long periods may not suit the petrol. That said I cant see why not or rather my Man Maths cant see why not!!

When I had my SC I was doing 4-5k miles a year, it was more important for me to have a car I liked and enjoyed.

The SC was quieter then the TDV8 and made a much nicer noise when you booted it.

On a long run I used to get 23-24mpg, locally I used to get 13-14mpg. Towing the trailer on a run dropped me down to mid-high teens.

Fuel costs are not an issue as mileage is so low, TD6 delivered sub 20 towing so we are talking minimal £amounts per year. My concern, and I know it is unfounded, is that the diesels are effortless and a petrol may struggle. I have never used a petrol for towing hence the question. Thumbs Up

I've towed many double horse boxes around the country - in my 2004 4.4 Petrol, previous to that 4 x Ford Explorers 4.0 Petrols. I also occasionally use a Shogun 3.5 petrol to tow too. Horseboxes as well as fully loaded 3500kg flatbeds loaded with hay. The petrol automatics tow wonderfully - but my new 4.4 TDV8 is in a league of its own towing - as Stan says, the torque is incredible and that 8 speed box makes short shrift of towing.

for me, 4.4 TDV8 all day every day. But the petrols will do it all day every day as well! Just a bit more thirstier. Current Fleet:-

I've regularly used all of my FFs to tow a car-trailer-and-car (something over 2 tons) or a Plant-trailer-and-digger (also north of 2 tons). Was absolutely fine in my 4.4 Petrol V8, easier still in the 4.2 SC and capable of ludicrous mode in the 5.0 - not that you would go near that with animals on board. I've never owned and therefore towed with an oil burner but cant imagine it would offer any noticeable improvement - and I know its less fun once unhitched. The 5.0 is around 17mpg when I'm towing...the 4.2 was 15 or 16. Mike - MPx

If you find the TD6 ok for towing then any of the petrols will be a step up. I've towed loads with the TD6 - a 3500kg trailer fully loaded. It's agony when you reach a long incline. You either put your foot down and get deafened, or face a long slow grind up the hill.
