3.6 TDV8 Rebuild

So, my engine has eaten half of its EGR valve and turned it into granular pieces and fed it back into itself!

Looks like I'm going to need to change the head, possibly a cylinder and most likely a turbo and obviously new EGR. Plus a thorough clean of the induction system to get rid of the metal & oil that has found its way there.

I'm considering tacking the necessary works myself as I am finding it increasingly difficult to trust companies to do the job competently or in a financially viable way. The companies found by google/ebay searches have terrible reviews. Buying a used engine from a breaker would leave me wondering how long it would be until that one would pop.

Anyway, reading the workshop manual, theres a bunch of special tools listed... are these all strictly necessary?

Has anyone else recently taken on a job like this at home? How long am I looking at to get the head off to a point where I can inspect everything? I've got as far as removing EGRs and glow plugs today, hence the diagnosis. How long to do the entire job?

If I'm being foolhardy and this isn't a job to be tackled at home, can anyone recommend a competent company please? __

How have you reached the decision the engine needs to come apart? I ask as we have had a few 3.6’s hydrolock themselves on their own oil! A week later they are only locking up via half a turn etc etc etc...

Figured I’d need to get the head off at least to find out where the egr piece has gone and took glow plugs out and one was gunky so think there’s bad compression there.

Engine will run but very lumpy with white/light grey smoking.

Plenum also had shards of metal and oil. __

STOP! Don’t run the car at all! You may well find the EGR has gone through the turbo and the turbo has relocated itself inside one of the cats...

I would remove, inspect and change both EGR’s if necessary and remove & inspect turbo’s & replace if necessary... Replace the intercooler and clean all other intake parts...

Do all of the above before then running the engine to see what happens at that point sir Thumbs Up

Wouldn’t the fact there’s metal and oil in the intake part mean that I’m already too late? __

Don replace the EGRs just remove and blank exhaust, cycle coolant pipes, and fit emulators. I’ve fitted these but left my EGRs in place, and inoperable in the closed position.

I'd get a price off Craig for both eventualities I.e. The Remedial work and in worst case scenario an engine rebuild - at least you would know it would be done correctly Thumbs Up 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17
