The snow is here. I've found several different discussions on this, but I don't seem to be able to find a definitive answer. So in the interests of clarity, I thought I'd ask you all.

In snowy weather, what would be better at getting up hills? A FFRR on summer tyres, or a Jaguar XF on winter tyres?

I'm guessing the Jaguar will be better at stopping...

I would say the XF. Winter tyres make such a difference.

Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey

The FF gets my vote. If it was a FWD car with winter tyres it would be better IMO. RWD cars just don't work in snow no matter what in my opinion... MY11 4.4 TDV8 Vogue SE

If you mean the roads around here (Hampshire) the answer is "neither". Because the road will be blocked by stranded cars, especially "premium German saloons" with low profile tyres.
You can have all the traction you want, but you can't get round Matt in his Audi A4 who's sideways across the road.

Main issue certainly is other cars. I tend to stick to more rural roads on the way to work in these sort of conditions. Having said that I had to make a hill start on a steep snow covered road this morning and it did struggle to get traction initially, made it without major issue but the traction control was working quite hard. A decent set of M+S tyres would have made quite a difference (or the full winters curently sitting in the garage !).
Oh and I'm in a 30 yr old classic!
To answer the OP probably the car with winters but I'd rather have 4wd and winters.

I'd love to have winters on my RR. I've always kept a spare set of wheels with winters on, but I swapped my car this year and now the old wheels don't fit over the callipers. The tyres are nearly new, too, so I didn't want to take them off. I'm planning to swap them for all-weathers next year (or the year after, depending on how much wear I get out of them by then), but by then Sod's law says we won't have any snow at all! I was going to buy a spare set of wheels to put winters on, but I've got to sell the others first and I haven't got around to it. (If anybody wants a set of 19" wheels with lightly used winters on, give me a shout! Otherwise I'll put them up for sale on here when I get round to it.)

I'm still 50-50 on which car to use, but I think I'm coming down on the side of 4x4. Although as you say, the problem isn't so much which car I do or don't use, but people who can't drive and don't know how to drive in snow. Nobody is going anywhere if the road is blocked due to muppetry. And then, of course, the RR is the only car to have as it can drag people out of the way.

This is the heart of the red zone in the central belt of Scotland.. we had over 15cm yesterday and again last night and more this morning, I reckon we've had near 60cm (now compacted to 40-50cm)..

The one with winter tyres - as many have pointed out stranded traffic is the challenge to moving, but you’ll be glad of the winter tyres when you need to stop to avoid the numpties 4.4 AdBlu Tractor

Well.....my Morris Traveller just cut through all the snow a few years back when we had that rough winter. His little 145 tyres - and rear wheel drive - allowed me to go back and forth to work every day regardless! Used to see lots of 'premium German' on stupid fat tyres stranded everywhere but Monty went through it all. Mind you, I had fitted Traction Control to him (a 3x2 slab in the boot!) and ABS because it was so cold my leg was trembling

All cars in my household have winter tyres in the past have sailed up snow covered inclines in a BMWwith winters past all sorts including FF my FF with winters has never had an issue and is even better at stopping in the dry when the temp is below 7 degrees so the Jag in my opinion

The FFRR will be better on fresh snow assuming a M+S tread pattern

Compacted snow or ice, i’ll take the winter tyres every time

I’d also rather come back down the hill with the lighter car on winter tyres

My FFRR has winter tyres, so an easy decision for me
