Buying a L322 without a main dealer or specialist SH

Just looking for a few points of view on this.

A friend has just found himself quite taken with my 3.6 TDV8 VSE and thinks he might want one. On behalf of this friend, I have seen one on the web local to me, looks nice, got the new dash with the dual picture screen. 60k miles. I have only been looking for 5 minutes or so.

The last service in the book was done by the selling dealer (not sure on the date, I haven't seen the car or the docs) and the dealer said that the previous two stamps are neither main dealer or specialist.

Personally I would not buy a car like a RR without it having a service history from a main dealer or well known specialist.
3 month warranty provided in the dealers own workshop. What do others think about that? Keep looking for one with a better service history ?

If its been serviced properly using the correct fluids then it shouldn’t be a problem. Personally I would find a different one if only because the previous owner seems to have run it on a budget, why else the accelera tyres....

That said it does look in decent nick. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

Made me laugh that I missed the tyres - you are dead right. It is a big clue to it being run on a budget.

I am always wary when the dealer has serviced it himself as well, makes me wonder if something dodgy has happened with the mileage.

It does look in good condition though, however a really good valet can do that.

True. I have had some very poor main dealer services done too.

I.e. £600 for a service and they didn't put enough oil in, and they didn't put the 1 litre top up bottle of oil in the car either.

When I phoned them they asked me to drive back to them (a 60 mile round trip) so they could check the oil level. I disagreed and said I shouldn't be inconvenienced for their mistake and said that after seven years of ownership I knew how to check the oil. After a kerfuffle with them they agreed to post out the oil top upx2 to me. They sent the wrong oil. This was main dealer for Porsche.

Edit - I had booked a "while you wait" service slot. Arrived at 8am. They started on the car about 1pm and finished it at 5:30. Very poor.

I think your mate could do better. £16,500 seems steep for a 3.6
Either pass or go in a bid hard at £14,500 and you can cite the lack of proper history, cheap tyres - and the fact that you can get a 2010 4.4 for that money.
. Cheers, Greg

"Cheap tyres" could also be value tyres, I ran my 3.6 on Nexens because I really didn't want to subsidise Pirellis F1 activities but I still spent loads getting the car as I wanted it - age and condition are your deciders - not tyres. Geoff

Smile All good points folks. Thanks.

Sorry supershuttle, you know I hadn't really considered that and you raise a good point there. I guess the point of view of where the "tyres being the only point of contact with the road" and should therefore always be the best you can afford had become something embedded in my mindset - it is easy to pick up that kind of mentality from the forums for sports cars and might not be so important on a big 4x4. Happy to stand corrected - thanks.

I do think the car looks a good one. The dealer is no Harry from Harry's garage and I think I would always like to buy from a gentleman seller who is long established with a great rep. This dealer has 3 our of 5 stars, and with the service history it makes me a little nervous. If it had a 12 month warranty in the deal, rather than the dealers workshop providing the warranty for only three months, that would be positive. Maybe I will take a drive down today and suss them out, see if they seem a quality and legit outfit - first impressions when I phoned them - definitely not "Harry's Garage".

Like GGDRR says - bid hard and take the risk or look elsewhere.

I guess if my mate had it for a few years and presented a solid service history from his time as the owner then the current service history wouldn't be so off putting to any future buyers should he come to sell it.

Are there any specialist dealers in this field that we should be looking at as a first port of call? Dealers that really know these cars, provide great prep, great after service and a solid warranty ?

I totally agree on this point. I am a mechanic by trade and do all of my own work on my cars once they are out of warranty(I don't trust dealers as I have had too many dodgy jobs done by them when my cars have been in warranty). I ran my 2002 L322 on Nexans because I found that with all of the roundabouts in MK I was chewing the outside walls of my tyres and the Nexans were fitted as a cheap alternative. Having said that, I was surprised by the Nexans because off road traction was far superior to the Pirelli's and they lasted /wore a lot better. Cheap tyres does not mean a badly looked after car! The Best 4x4 by far, so long as you have deep pockets.

I don’t disagree on the nexens, they are good value, non branded tyres aren’t necessarily bad, however they aren’t nexens.

Cheap tyres aren’t necessarily bad, but some of them are definitely better than others. Some non mainstream brands are class leaders for example Nokian tyres are some of the best winters available. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
