Lower tailgate won’t open

As title, I open upper tailgate and press the button on the lower tailgate and it makes the whooshing sound but will not open or release the lower tailgate. Any pointers to where I start looking? Thumbs Up

Push down on the two hidden catches to release the lower tailgate.

Had exactly the same issue yesterday...... 8 years of dust and grit in the latch mechanisms. and the manual release doesn't work too well when there in this state.
Easy enough job to remove and clean, just watch out for the return spring coming off the cable inside the tailgate!!!!
Comes off the latches and drops on the soft opener like a dream now. 2010 TDV8 3.6 Galway Green

Haven’t got round to checking mine Embarassed

Don’t want to try and open it and find it won’t stay shut somehow, so waiting for a time when I check and can have time to sort any problems.

Is there a soft opener function - lol Or is that only on newer vehicles ?
Ours (2006 TDV8) just seems to drop when opened.
I'll have to have a look in more detail at the mechanism Paul,

Paul

Have a look at this,it may be helpful. It does appear that the kit may have been fitted by Wurzel on a 2008.

Hope it helps, ours has one and it certainly does. Possibly get one from Dan at Duckworths.

I fitted a kit to my 2007 a few years ago, although buy the bolts yourself, LR want about £10.00 for two bolts.
My 2010 came with one, guess they were standard fitment from 2010 onwards. 2010 TDV8 3.6 Galway Green

Richard,
many thanks. That looks a great mod. I'll start looking for the bits as the forum post suggests the Land Rover cost went up significantly once LR discovered they'd got an aftermarket demand in 2011/ 12. Paul,

Paul

Thanks and hope it helps.

Sorry to go on, but, could I suggest you also investigate the straps that hold the lower gate level? There seem to be some posts indicating they can corrode badly under the sheath and end covers. Won't help, if like me, you sit on the tailgate for a cuppa or climb in to unload something and they let go.

ouch!!

No connection to Dan but he seems well regarded on here.
