Creaking sound when changing ride height?

Yesterday I upped the ride height to get through some flooded roads. Both on the way up and back down again there were some alarming creaking sounds from the rear of the car.

Does this foretell of some imminent failure I am going to encounter?

I'd rather sort the problem out before any major failure occurs, so any help much appreciated.

Sometimes get this if you're holding the car on the brakes when altering ride height, try again on level ground with car in neutral or Park. 2006MY 4.2 SC

I also get the same noise when lowering or raising with my foot on the brake, when in neutral with the brakes off its silent.
