Ok, so changed the thermostat and got an airlock, are they difficult to bleed?

And........ Here's a new one for you all who like mods, the old thermostat had been modded with 8 small holes drilled through the closing disk, that's a new one on me!

So the machine was left overnight to settle, topped up this morning, left all day and tried this evening.

All seemed well, temperature cam up as normal, needle at 12 o'clock, sat there, didn't move -- top hose hot, bottom hose (from the stat) cold, nice warm air coming through in the car -- after being stationary for a while, 5 or 10 mins, fans 'cut in' and check the bottom hose all hot, all good!

Leave to idle, all good

Put the aircon on at idle -- all bad! needle almost of the guage straight away Sad

Hold the throttle at 2000 revs needle comes back, ok idle again, temp goes up, aircon off, temp comes down -- OK so this needs a road test, 300 tards up the road needle of the scale, 300 yards back, open the bonnet to see what's going on, coolant out of the filler cap -- hmmmm, no hot air in the car anymore either

And then.....................

The top hose blows it's connection on the block with the obvious immediate loss of water.

Now I'm really hoping you learned chaps and chapesses here can help with this?

Thoughts -- is the rad blocked?

is the electric fan 2 stage and I'm only getting 2nd stage? ie. not running at slower speed when needed?

Is the viscous working as it should (seems to be)

Or, worst case have I got block pressure in the coolant system?

Really need some help here please!!????

Sounds like you still have air in system they can be a swine to bleed and will destroy expansion tank and top hose check bottle cap and if 200 change for 140 do not overfill fan won't work if air in system as it is not heating due to lack of water in system.make sure you have no leaks anywhere and change stat hope you fix problem

Further update, filled it with water tonight, tested for exhaust gas at the expansion bottle, all going well for 10 mins, then the dreaded colour change.

Ok, so I need to get the heads done, any recommendations for Oxfordshire?

Have you had the radiator out yet and checked it for blockage ? .

Vaporizer can leak gas into water as it uses hot water to vaporize gas mabe run her on petrol for a while and check again can be a common fault .Not to expensive to fix better than head gaskets

Now then, to the fans

I thought I'd read the electric fan cuts in first, followed by the viscous -- in fact I'm sure Joe90 said he'd removed his viscous in favour of just using the electric one.............. or have I got that all cart before horse?

A viscous fan will always spin as it's attached to the water pump which is driven by the serpentine belt. You can stop it using something that won't break it such as a rolled up newspaper. When the radiator get's up to temperature, the viscous fluid heats up and locks the fan clutch and then fan will spin at actual engine speed. Don't try and stop the fan when the radiator is up to temperature though and the clutch has locked.
