I’ve been driving exactly the same thing (as an XF Sportsbrake) for the last 8 days. “Mine’s” the silver one:

How are you getting on wit yours? Give at another week and I’ll have probably got the hang of getting in and out of it! The grip and handling on mine are fabulous; it must be even better in the smaller and lighter XE.

I'm torn about getting rid of mine. Cannot afford a new shape, so looking at XJ's. Also thrown into the mix which quite surprised me were Bentley Flying Spurs. Get a nice one for shy of £25000.

Which one do you have now?

Which vintage XJ are you thinking of?

I had a 4.2 Xj when i was 17 ( 33 years ago ....... scary ) and its the only sensible option for me if i couldn't have a FFRR. The newer version looks a very nice place to spend some time. 2015 4.4 AB

An XJ 4.2 at 17! Shocked Nice one Thumbs Up A Series 1, 2 or 3?

Try telling that to insirance companies now Laughing We seem to be so stupidly risk averse now that we wouldn’t trust our cotton wool padded 17 year olds with much more than a Noddy car with the engine from a food blender and even that’ll need a telematics box! Evil or Very Mad Rant over Laughing

I really like the current XJ, especially the interior.

RM, regards the XJ, something like a 3.0 Portfolio on a 14 plate or similar. I really must stop looking at Flying Spurs Big Cry

My old jalopy is a 3.6 TDV8. Had her three years, never owned anything longer than six months before.

Hi RM, im following your tale and feeling your pain. It was a series 1 , a friends mum had it from new and the family had biught her a new one ( this would be about 1982/3) , the dad wanted it gone and sold it to me very cheap. Apprently she went mad when she found out because she loved the series 1. The jag came with the original order form in the glove box. insurance was in my mums name with me as named driver and i lived in south london !!!!!

Lovely car and had the twin tanks, ( which i only ever filled once) unfortunately after one careful owner it ended up in my hands so it didnt last very long. Always had a soft spot of an XJ and have very fond memories of Stead ftom the Avengers hunting down a formula ford open wheel race car on a track in his 2 door coupe xj6 to interview the driver !!!!!!

The new XJ looks lovely and they have a great presence on the road.
I hope your back in your FFRR asap, seems incredible a new part has to be manufactured because i would presume thats going to be a recall for all the other new ones out there if the fault cant be fixed with currently available parts.

@ archermav: It's a funny think when a 3.0 XJ is the "sensible" option! Rolling Eyes

I know nothing of the Flying Spur, but can understand the temptation Thumbs Up

Thanks Doplh, yes I remember that episode going out live Very Happy

Brother had a Series 1 XJ when I was away at college. It was a proper baby pink Shocked Bought it for peanuts (obviously Laughing )

I remember the dustmen collecting one day and one of them shouted to the other "Hey, ain't that Ken Skidmore's Jag?!" I could never thing of it as anything other than belonging to the brilliantly named Ken Skidmore after that Laughing

It's probably unlikely that there'll be a general recall as it only seems to affect a very few cars and it's 7 hours labour to change the part. It'll probably only be fitted to cars if they fail. Alternatively, if they wait long enough (which is now looking like a possibility), all the SDV8's will be out of warranty by the time they've come up with a solution Evil or Very Mad

Going back to the OP’s original question, what kinds of uses are you going to put the car to?

Towing? Carrying people and/or luggage? How many miles will you being doing? Does it need to be a dedicated 4x4, or would a regular car do the job? That sort of stuff really...
