Thing is, I did the factory tour recently and the QC is actually very impressive.

Now I know many of you are now laughing uncontrollably, but I've seen the factory.

But what they make there is bodies and they attach 1000's of components that come in on trucks. It's the components, be it a seat heater unit, engine components, etc etc etc. ..that break.

So what they are failing on is putting harder QC / testing / performance / come back requirement on the component suppliers.

In this case is it Ford's fault (Ford engine) or LR's?

I say both.

Same for the turbo drain.
. Cheers, Greg

I have just spotted that the sensor has been superseded twice since the L322 / early L405 version.

Craig,

Can I ask what you asked the dealer to do when you wanted the EGR/T sensor replaced? I'd want to make sure they replace the right part!

I'm showing P040D-00 (2F) too and looking at the time and effort the guys are having to put in, then I think I may chicken out of doing it myself and get the dealer on the job.

Mike

Been trying on this again this morning.

The space is so small you're doing it mostly by feel. You can look, or you can put your hand in the 'hole' but not both! I tried to lower the GoPro but it won't fit down there. That's how small this space it.

However the day's not over and made a TINY bit of progress...

The sensor is surrounded by two exhaust heat shields. The two shields are anchored down by an 8mm bolt right next to the sensor.

I've managed to bend the top shield away, enough to get the socket down a bit further than before.

The hole on the next shield (which can't be bend out of the way) is not centred properly and fouls the socket from slipping down fully over the sensor.

At the top of the socket you can see the cable for reference/orientation. This photo taken from next to the shock tower NS, zooming in down the hole as the camera won't fit in there.

 Cheers, Greg

Just had this from Baltic Blue Mike on another thread:

Quote:
Greg,
I spoke to my local indi about the sensor just before I came on holiday.
He was not prepared to quote an exact price, but said it is a pig of a job and that the tool is useless because they spread as the sensor is so tight, so they usually finish up breaking the old sensor and hammering on a deep socket, then just use the tool to fit the new one, which he thought was about £60-70.
Mike.

This is the first bit of info I've had from anyone having done the job. Thank you Mike!!

Hammering on a deep socket makes sense, it might push past the shields that way. But I've got absolutely no idea where the hammer will go! It's so small down there!!!

Great to have insight from somebody who's done the job. It's got me thinking about long sockets vs the special tool (for removal).

Ive unplugged the sensor and the engine runs fine (need the car usable). So thinking about breaking it off now... Might also order a set of long sockets.

. Cheers, Greg

A few baby steps this afternoon since last post...

Decided to take the plunge and break the sensor off. Mike's Indy's comments just helped me think differently, the special socket opening up is a great shout but does require you to break the sensor off.

You can see in this pic how this slotted socket could open up under heavy pressure.

Bending the sensor back and forth in the tiny space took around an hour to break it. Can you believe it! Got it eventually and here it is.
Engine runs fine without it.

And for the first time, a socket goes on what remains of the sensor:

Wow, this is progress!

Next problem: Mike's guy was also right about the long socket (which I don't have). This std socket is too short to fit a handle on. And a short extension bar is too long.

A note on the shields, with the top one bent even further out of the way, the socket will go over the sensor with the second shield in place.

I did slip the special socket over it to see if the length was ok to fit a handle in the space available and and there is maybe an inch of turn available. But not today, I don't want to stretch out the slotted socket and will use if for installing not removing.

So a few mini-hurdles crossed today. But who knows if I can get it to turn? I don't have a blow torch and not sure it would fit in there to apply some serious heat. It would be really risky too.

Stay tuned for the next episode to find out!
. Cheers, Greg

Great progress Greg Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

What size deep socket is needed ?
I have got a set of 3/8 sq drive deep sockets, but assume the job needs 1/2” so would have to buy one also.
Mike.

PS.
Would running the engine to get the manifold hot be helpful or hindrance ? G reg 2.5VM Vogue Portofino red 1991- 1999

THx Nino.

Thx Mike - 3/8 probably fine. I've ordered a 1/2" long 13mm because I have all 1/2 drive. Can't see why 3/8 any less suitable.
Running the engine is a good idea for heating the sensor. But won't work in practice as your hands are next to the manifold. I've been working on it cold and my hands have still been taking a punishment!
. Cheers, Greg

Just seen this from new member Paul on the welcome thread

Quote:
Hi my name is Paul I’ve recently purchased a 2012 L322 Westminster in black, 51000 miles on the clock, it drives lovelythe only problem is I keep getting DPF full amber warning coming up, it clears but then comes up again after a short time 46 miles 12 miles and 7 miles the last three times , I’ve been advised by my local independent RR specialist that I need a forced Re-gen and an EGR temperature sensor @£526.70 +Vat

Gives you a cost idea. No doubt something they've done before.

My problems is not any issue spending £631, it's that I hate getting a man in. For anything really. Wired my own house too (all certified btw)

I don't do crosswords, I bought a Range Rover instead.
. Cheers, Greg

Mike, i simply gave them the code. In their investigation they were asked by the warranty people to eliminate a wiring fault! Which they did and did not find one... So, they change the sensor... Simples...

So, to clarify... The book time for this job is 0.8hrs... Im unsure weather dealers are allowed to charge more time than the book time?

Mike, if it were me I would ring all of your local MD’s and simply say, I have this fault code, which relates to this problem, I know JLR give you a book time of 0.8hrs to do the job, what is worst case scenario please? What happens if the thing snaps off? Etc etc etc and then see what their response is?

Thumbs Up

Nice work Greg, you get an A++ for persistence.

I too hate getting people in for anything I can do myself, but the older I get the more the 'can't be ar5ed' factor kicks in on the tougher jobs Wink Too many toys, not enough time
