leaking rear diff.

anyone ever had a leaking rear diff ?

Sadly mine is. First I thought it was perhaps a dodgy gasket from where the two half cases bolt together but on closer inspection there's oil soak ahead of that near to where the prop shaft goes into the diff so I suspect its the seal there. Sad

Hi
I have a 3.0L 2014 model and just before its warranty ran out I took it for a pre MOT check and the rear diff oil seal was spotted. Shocked
I was lucky as Stratstone Stockton covered this. It did take them nine days but the courtesy car I managed to run up 1009 miles. Confused
Sorry to hear your issue.

Mine was replaced on my previous 2015 3.0L VSE. It was done under warranty and was fine after that for thousands of miles. I was lucky in that the weep of oil was very, very slight and just smeared the diff casing on the underside. It was spotted by the dealer during a routine health check. Range Rover Sport 2023 D350 Autobiography

Hi same here.
Normal main dealers, they had ordered the wrong part and hence why it too so long.

The fix is to fit a pinion repair kit (LLR068951) which is about £90 plus a bunch of nuts/bolts, new diff oil etc . As for labour its hard to say as the dealer was doing a few jobs on mine and I only have a sum total of labour time. I would guess at a couple of hours?? Mine was done under extended warranty but I always get a copy of the invoice for my records.

There is a special Service message issued to dealers (SSM72080) as it is a common / known problem.

Speaking to a Master Tech, this whole problem came about because at time of manufacture, they allegedly never bothered to grease the seals before inserting them. They were doomed from day 1.

hope that helps.

Yes, ours. It was in at MD for "interim service" today (still is now) and during the health check they reported a leak from the pinion seal on the rear diff. They said it takes several hours to replace (think the advisor might have said 6 hours, although no idea if that's accurate).

It's covered under the LR Extended Warranty.

Car is garaged each night. Clean garage floor with no signs of this leak on the ground for info.

Note - 7 months into paying for own LR Extended Warranty on this car (£145.50/ month without LR breakdown cover) and this is one of two LR warranty claims made and authorised today (no claims made in previous 7 months). The other successful claim of today was a new front "passenger door latch" which is how the MD described it:

Thumbs Up

They've done it now (or so they say) at the main dealer under warranty.

I'm curious whether there could be any correlation between changing the rear diff oil and a subsequent leaking pinion seal on the rear diff. The same main dealer replaced the front and rear diff oil last year. It doesn't matter anyway as its been sorted, just curious and I guess the answer would be "unlikely".

It is ludicrous that originally the diffs were being replaced to fix a leaking pinion seal and still ludicrous that the pinion bearings are being replaced to fix a leaking seal when the normal procedure for any other diff is to replace just the seal, at least until shown that a seal alone doesn't stop the leak. Maybe LR don't have the seal as a replacement part but the seal is in all likelihood available from a bearing supplier.

Maybe someone who is having a leak fixed could ask for the seal to be salvaged so that the seal number can be published.

Yes, according to the service bulletin LR graciously made the bearing + seal kit available to avoid having to replace the whole diff but no mention of just the seal being available. Its an expensive exercise compared with just replacing the seal although less than a complete diff especially if the diff is an e-diff as in your SC.
