Instrument Cluster

Morning
Well another day, another glitch Big Cry . Just come out of work and as well as a few MIA pixels the milage section of the cluster appears to have no back light. Very random Shocked . How is the cluster illuminated and if it's bulbs are the changeable by me or does it need opening up?
Thanks
Rob

It's bulbs that are accessed by removing the cluster. To remove it you need to remove the two side vents and dash top

That's good. So it's a simple DIY fix?

Well sort of...

Depending whether you have 06MY or later there is a fixed wire on these models that goes to the front sounder in the overhead console. This means that you can't fully remove the cluster. Also the cluster is surrounded by a black plastic 'cage'. Now this can be removed my carefully prising open the plastic clips with a small screw driver and removing the retaining screws. After that you can access the bulb holders.

All in all the job should take a couple of hours to remove the dash top, instrument cluster and refit. Off the top of my head you will need a t30, t25, precision screwdrivers (to remove side vents) and a cross head screw driver. Oh and maybe just a pinch of patience to remove the side air vents... 06MY 4.4 V8 Autobiography Cairns Blue with Navy & Parchment Interior

check out the powerful.uk web site on replacing the side vents. it shows a video of how to remove the vents which is the trickiest thing. i then sent my cluster to bmwpixelfix. happy days.
