Should I get a Steering lock?

I’m taking delivery of my new (to me) FFRR this weekend. It will be parked on the street, as all my cars have been for years as I have neither a garage or off street parking. It will also be standing idle for long periods as I don’t drive to work. I’ve noticed quite a few 405s have old fashioned steering locks. On my L322 I didn’t bother, but this one is more expensive and has the keyless ‘convenience’ locks, so possibly more vulnerable. What’s the consensus from existing 405 owners?

Each to their own, but I wouldn’t bother.

Best thing you can do is keep the keys far away from the car, so it’s probably safer than being on a drive.

I keep my keys in a faraday wallet when they are in the house but that's about it Confused Cheers Ian

if they want your FF then they will bring a cordless grinder with them to cut the steering lock off...

Fit an immobiliser that prevents the car from being driven off even if the key has been stolen or cloned. 2019 L405 SDV8 Autobiography

I had a Ghost system fitted to my 2013 AB 12 months ago.

The system allows the engine to start but as soon as the gearbox is taken out of park it shuts the engine down and won’t restart. I just have to follow the programmed sequence of dashboard button presses to disable the system before I select drive.

It doesn’t matter if thieves steal the keys or clone the key, they can’t drive the car away.

With the system fitted i’m very relaxed about parking my car anywhere.

1) get a faraday bag - they do work! or at least put your keys in a metal biscuit tin.
2) yes - get a steering lock - the best is probably "disk lok" - big and ugly but will take someone with a grinder or other tool, longer to cut off. (they generally come well recommended in independent reviews)
3) fit immobiliser and tracker (didn't your insurance company already insist on this ??)

Nothing makes a car theft proof if given enough time. All you can do is do what is reasonable to slow them down as much as you can so that a scumbag decides it's too much hassle and moves on to the one down the road where the owner couldn't be bothered going the extra mile to protect their pride and joy.
