Looking to step back in...

OK its been a while but while my search still goes on for a Ruffina Red Diesel L405 i am contemplating buying a high miler TDV8 for the winter maybe even a keeper to add to the carpool.

Car is 1st of the facelift (2010) Vogue, black on black with 120k on the clock....

Im going to go up and have a look tomorrow, seller assures me its wanted for nothing but proof is in the pudding its fairly cheap @ £9k (trade price he's been offered on the TDV8 from the dealer he's collecting his car from on Monday)

Ive had a few rangies in the past and been luck so far...just dont want to end up with a money pit ( Rolling with laughter awaits the comments)

What should i be looking for, i am familiar with the rust issues on the tailgate and arches but im more concerned about things like the air suspension and egr etc? Car has deployable steps also are these problematic?

Also at 120k should the gearbox oil be done if so what the cost typically?

P.S on its last MOT the advisories were

Offside Rear Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material Between B/hoses (1.1.11 (c))
Brake pipe corroded, covered in grease or other material Both front to rears (1.1.11 (c)) Range Rover SC 35th Anniversary 2006

United Kingdom 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE TDV8 Stornoway Grey

Is it a 3.6 2010 or a 4.4 2010?

If 3.6 it's silly cheap.
1f 4.4 it's insanely cheap.

...which means what?

Might have rust, or issues, or flakey/non-existant service history. Accident damage, or worse Cat D damage - there must be a reason - other that 120k miles on the clock - that it's that cheap.

If it checks out it's your lucky day as the trade in has just low balled him. Finger-in-the-air it's worth 12-15 grand if a 3.6. Depends on condition and history. Enter the Reg into Cazana.com to see it's current book value.

So check carefully! There is a L322 buyers guide here, it's quite long. You'll need a lot of time on your own without the guys standing over you to check all the times on the list. Bring a trolley jack and stands and get under it. And get the bottom engine cover off. Only three bolts but those lower covers hide oil leaks.

Or get it checked by a LR garage.

Steps should be ok, if they go in and out smoothly and quickly. They need a spray of lube now and again.

Check the history re the gearbox oil. You'd want to see evidence of not just the box oil change, the transfer case and the two diffs also.

If a 4.4 you need to know about something called the Turbo Drain Mod. Search here for plenty of info.

Good luck!
. Cheers, Greg

United Kingdom 2016 Range Rover Autobiography SDV8 Santorini Black

I would imagine as a 2010 it’s probably a 3.6.

As said get round the car without the bloke there and have a good look. Browse the wiki at the top of the site page for the common problems and buyers guide.

As a stop gap car while you look for your 405 it’s probably not going to be with you for long so if it doesn’t drop to bits there and then you are probably ok!!

EGRs are difficult to check, as is the state of the turbos, but if the maintenance is there then they could well be problem free. Check the top turbo hoses, and on a test drive make sure you give it a couple of boot fulls of go pedal. If possible get a friend to follow you on the sets and keep an eye out for clouds of black smoke.

As a 2010, be aware that the NAV latest update is 2014 and that costs £££ to get so get a Tom Tom, and buy a tune2air/bovee for wireless music streaming.

Look out for errors with the adaptive suspension, this is caused by a couple of broken wires and is an easy fix, and the rear dampers do weep slightly so that’s ok (it’s not, but they pretty much all do that). There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜
