Non Genuine front brake pads and sensor the LR garage said!

Get this; I take my Vogue (which I bought brand new last year) in for its second service and said the front brake pads were squeeling...they investigate and tell me that it is because I’ve fitted non genuine pads and sensors. In response I said that’s interesting as I’ve only ever taken the car to the same LR garage and the pads are as new from the factory!

Basically they have accused me of changing the original pads for aftermarket! Also weirdly they tell me that the fronts are on 9mm and rears are on 4mm...the car has done 34k miles in less than 2 years due to motorway miles. But the front pads were also listed as at 9mm back in February when I had 17k miles covered and the last service.

So I’m now concerned. How can I check they are genuine and if not how could that happen on an Apr 17 L405?

I also said the yellow brake pad sensor cable came dislodged and they said the genuine cable isn’t yellow. Is that true?

Well, mine are "genuine LR approved pads" as provided by the main stealers, and they can often squeak quite a lot.

There is a technical bulletin about about rear pads (so not sure if it covers front pads) - LTB00725v2. Basically it says (not surprisingly) to put a bit of anti squeal grease ( bit like copper slip) on the edges of the pad backing plate. It also says the brake sensor wires should be replaced if appearing worn. -

Hardly a big job for them. Laughing

I know...I kind of lost interest in the squeal when they intermated that I had gone somewhere else and put non genuine pads and sensors in when the car is only just over a year and a half old and nobody else other than them had touched the car!

After a robust discussion they are adamant they are non genuine which has left me wondering how the car can come from LR like that = unlikely.

Is there any way of confirming they are genuine?

I suspect in reality my monthly detail has resulted in the branding details coming off the visible side of the pad as I can see no logos etc on the visible back of the pad.

Grateful for for any thoughts so I can confirm with the garage.

Overall, these cars are lovely but they get let down massively by the dealer network.

If you're confident then you can flip the discussion;

You can say you've never touched them and if they are aftermarket then LR or the dealer did it, you're outraged and you want them off and investigated. Sent to labs etc. It's their assertion, ask them to prove it!

You simply (rightly) complained of squealing.

If you're in warranty then you can kick off to LR separately.
Or another dealer.

You can also be sure due to the useless mm readings they gave you, that the tech who reported this is not reliable.

I know..it’s where I was going and then got to the point of my word against theirs. They told me the yellow brake pad sensor cable was the incorrect colour...a quick search on google shows some yellow cables as genuine LR.

They must have thought ‘why would I change them already on an Apr17 car that only I have owned and used’..

As I say, it’s the point of a potential non genuine part from the factory now which I cannot believe...I guess there are always the car park fairies that could have changed them out Rolling with laughter

A strange one.

As GGD says, if you've only ever used the same main dealer since new and can evidence from receipts that you have them do all and any other jobs, why would bother having aftermarket pads fitted elsewhere. The reasonable person should give you the benefit of any doubt, particularly given you are talking about an expensive car.

You could:

1. Take front, back and side photos of the offending pads and post them on here for the armchair experts to forensically examine the images and offer you indication points as to whether and why they are genuine pads (or not);

2. Do the same with the front pads to determine whether the branding seems to be worn or in tact;

3. Do the same with the sensor wire.

But what a hassle to do any of that!

Have you got a full list of all that's been done to the car since new and if so has any of the work required new tyres, wheels off and/ or work in and around the brake calipers, discs, pads, sensor wires?

Our L322 had genuine LR pads fitted by a main dealer. They suffers brake squeal. Our L405 likewise.

I've just changed the discs all round on the L405 with genuine LR discs and have used EBC Greenstuff pads all round. The performance is better than the last pads (excellent) and no brake squeal.

very odd indeed

the wear sensor cable connector isn't yellow, but my guess it dirt/grime and age has tinted it to a yellow colour, I'd also hazard a guess a non cable would be black or white connector as well...

Thanks guys. The ends of the cable are black but the cable visible behind the front discs is yellow?

Got to get to the bottom of this, especially on such a new car. Gutted to have been treated that way too. Neutral

And yes, have all receipts from same garage. Only two services though with normal service items at 17k miles and then 32k miles...

Says: Brake Pad Wear Sensor Front - LR045959 (genuine). Is that correct Dan?
