2011 4.4 TDV8 Charging system fault, performance restricted

Ok guys, I thought I'd share this as my AB is currently out of action because of the errors shown above.

So the girlfriend and I drove to have a look at a uses 405 this morning and our car must have known which is why it threw it's toys out of the pram. Laughing
We arrive at the destination and everything's fine. We test the drive the 405 which we like but still appreciate the greatness of the L322. Perhaps in a different colour combo and different garage, we may have fallen more in love.

So we get back in our car and the first chime signals the error; Charging System Fault, then the next one is Restricted Performance. There's a red warning triangle and red battery symbol on the dash which only means bad things.

I leave the car running and start thinking what the hell could cause this, severe wet weather etc.
I then plug my trusty GAP tool in and read the faults but there's nothing showing up which is related to this.
I then notice the voltage looking pretty low (11-11.5V) which points to a battery issue or alternator.
I turn the car off, leave it for a few minutes and fire her up again, hoping the errors would have somehow vanished but I was wrong, they were still there. You could also tell that the battery was losing voltage.
I tried to drive off with the intention of limping home but then found the power steering was extremely heavy.
I leave the car running and have a look under the hood, oh great, the aux belt isn't moving. It's come off and from what I can see it looks like it's the tensioner pulley.
The belt didn't look like it had snapped so maybe it's just slipped off, I'm not sure.

So there we go, my first Range Rover let down in 8 or so months of ownership.

As I don't have breakdown cover, I left it there (hopefully safe) with the intention of signing up with the AA, waiting for 24 hours to elapse and then recover it to Rovertune who will then take care of it.

I hope this will help others if they find this issue as I struggled to find anyone else who suffered from this symptoms (at the same time).

Do we think it will be costly? 2011 Baltic Blue FFRR 4.4TDV8 AB

Done many of these sir Whistle

Tensioner... Take a torch, main air tube going into the front of the engine, top RHS... Got some water pipes next to it... (DONT snap the little ones off) now take your torch and look underneath these pipes, where the aux belt runs and you should see a tensioner, bet its running about 10-20 degrees out of alignment... If you take a 1/2" wrench and short extension you can fit your own belt back on! It throws the belt off as it wears due to it gradually going out of alignment...

The 1/2" short extension fits into a square hole on the front, simply move it up or down (can't remember which) against the tension and flick your belt back on... It will need replacing but should get you home/to the garage etc Thumbs Up

You sir, are an absolute gent. Thank you.

So just to make sure I've got this right, I just need to get a wrench and short extension down the RHS of the engine to the tensioner and flick it back on?

Because the garage isn't open until Monday, do you think it will be safe to drive it home today (circa 20 miles) then another 40 miles to the garage?

Thanks again Craig. Thumbs Up 2011 Baltic Blue FFRR 4.4TDV8 AB

You need to rotate the tensioner clockwise, refit the belt on all its pulleys then gently release the tensioner.

Can I do this from the top of the engine without removing anything? 2011 Baltic Blue FFRR 4.4TDV8 AB

Having just looked at mine, I doubt it. If the fan shroud could be removed then it looks possible.

The fan shroud is removed with the fan which requires a/c pipes to be disconnected so not a roadside task. The only hope is that you can get a socket in without removing anything. If the belt has stayed on its other pulleys, which is highly unlikely, then you may have a chance.

Cheers for your help Graeme, much appreciated.

As much as I want to give it a go myself where the car is at the moment, I don't want to make the situation worse so think I'll get the AA to recover me to Rovertune first thing tomorrow morning. 2011 Baltic Blue FFRR 4.4TDV8 AB

I intend seeing if it is possible to change the belt without removing the fan and shroud but don't know when that might happen. The first hurdle would be to remove and refit the stretchy fan belt!

Just had a quick look at one here, If you have a breaker bar (wheel nut bar) with a stubby extension, then you can put the belt on the tensioner without removing the shrouds... Makes life easier if you remove the main air intake pipe...

If the belt is undamaged then the tensioner can be replaced in situ without removing AC pipes... Thumbs Up
