I have to say I'm absolutely delighted, I had my son following behind today down in Bath and we'd driven around for about 50 miles yesterday, nowhere near 2000 rpm loads of stop / starts and this morning I asked him to video the back of it when I gave it kickdown going up a steep hill. It hung on to the gears and rocketed up the hill, not even a hint of any smoke. I really cant believe that it is an effective cure.
The other thing that used to happen under these conditions was i got a high cat temp followed by limited performance. Not a hint of it now and I have 'enjoyed' my car this weekend with several overtaking and motorway joining manoeuvres.
To say I'm impressed would be an understatement, thanks to this forum I found out what the issue was and was introduced to Green Oval.
Anyone that has this issue I urge you to get the job done, it removes that awkward feeling as you smoke out everyone behind. BMW i3 Electric Car

I bought a car that hasn't had the drain mod yet. It's under LR Warranty; no indication of any issue. Is a problem arising the only legitimate trigger for the TSB being enacted under warranty, or can I simply request that the mod is carried out?

See if you have the problem first (not all do apparently). If I drove mine around town keeping below 2000 rpm (not difficult), the first time after you use 2500 to 3500 rev range it was like something out of a bond movie, thick blue smoke screen for 30 to 40 seconds which the faded away. Once done it would remain clear until the oil built up again. BMW i3 Electric Car

Been thinking about this.... I've read through the TSB instructions and the main, scary job is removing a block plug, drilling it and tapping it to fit a hose adaptor. The new twin drain has the additional hose which goes onto the hose adaptor.

So there is a hole already. And it doesn't seem under very high pressure, since the rubber hose attaches with only a hose clip (and doesn't have and thread retention).

So here's my thought - do you need a threaded hose connector in the block?

Is there another way of getting a hose off that outlet?

I know you drill the hole but that's not nessessarily to make the diameter bigger for
Flow, its for the thread, the hole may be big enough.

The plug stays in under pressure of the oil system, can this be replaced with some find of adapted plug to create an outlet and fixed back in? Or can another non-threaded connector be fitted to an unmodified hole using the same technique as a plug;

Are the plugs bonded? They can be refitted right? In fact you have to remove a lower plug, use it as a drain for any debris, and then refit.

Would make this a super simple job, no? If it were possible.

Thoughts?

A 12mm hole needs to be drilled through to the inside before tapping a thread. A smaller hole already exists but presumably its not large enough.

The plugs are not re-usable but only because they're press fit and distort during fitting.

Drilling the hole seems to be to accommodate the thread.

The TSB states the use of a sealant around the outside edge of the plug post fitting.

Of note is that both holes go through the sump so quite possibly enough flow if a fitting can be installed in place of the upper plug.

When Green Oval did mine, the whole front subframe came off, it was 8 hrs or thereabouts up on a ramp. Afterwards a wheel alignment specialist reset all of the geometry. For me, whilst I'm not afraid of working on cars there was a bit too much hassle there, happy to pay the cash and let someone else skin their knuckles etc.
I must admit I wasn't convinced it would cure the issue that I had but it most definitely has, no hint of any smoke at the back at all. BMW i3 Electric Car

Just a very quick update, 3 weeks since my turbo drain mod was done by Green Oval Garage, I have don't a huge mix of driving including 250+ miles just dawdling around. Despite my best efforts to make it smoke, nothing, clean as a whistle. I'm delighted to have fixed this somewhat embarrassing problem. Thoroughly recommend getting the mod done if your FFRR is affected, if you're within travelling distance of Green Oval Garage, I cant recommend them highly enough. BMW i3 Electric Car

Hi there,

can someone tell me the diameter of the plug? I have plugs with connectors here. Perhaps then the drilling can be omitted. These have a diameter of about 36mm and hose 12mm. Smile
