Thanks, the first example is similar to what happened. Very scary going up 25% gradient , was in drive so will gearbox be damaged as well? I was so busy trying to stop engine did not notice that much smoke until engine had stopped and seemed on fire but was not.
I can not understand how this car self destructed when built for hills , rough roads and inclement weather such as high winds on the journey.

It only needs the failure of an oil seal on a turbo and the rest is history, a minor defect causing a major failure.

I hope it proves not to be the case but unfortunately the signs look like it being likely.

Do you have a warranty by any chance? BMW i3 Electric Car

No Warranty unfortunately, myself and wife are so upset this has happened on the first day of a week away in Yorkshire.
This is not our first Range Rover and still have our trusty Landcruiser from 2003 which we use as a car you can put anything in! 185k miles as is still going strong. Think we paid about 40k when the Ranger Rover was 115k

Unfortunately it doesn't help with your vehicle Richard, but it could be useful to know whether or not your vehicle's secondary turbo drain is the later twin drain style.

Very sorry to read this story. Is TDV8 the same as SDV8 or is the design different? I seem to recall that both TD & SD (albeit V6s) were available for the Discovery at one point. 2016 SDV8 AB

ABAB, my understanding is that the engines are basically the same but 405 version set up for more power (perhaps because lighter car). I think the earliest 405s had the old style turbo drain (i.e. mod desirable), not sure when that was changed, maybe would have been by the time of the 2014 car here.

Richardince, my sympathy to you, that must have been a frightening experience apart from the cost and hassle. If you have full franchise dealer service history and are a "good customer" you might possibly get some kind of goodwill contribution (on a new engine) through LR Customer Relations. Your dealer could ask them once it is clear what has happened and what is required, or you could call them on 0370 5000 500. Good luck with getting it sorted. Only Range Rovers since 1988

just had new engine from LR in mine. make sure your sat down.

the bill came to £22k Sad

Really sorry about that. Clearly it would be cheaper to find a unit from a salvage yard and get an experienced LR independent garage to fit it. - assuming they had the capability

I had not heard about “engine run a way’ before. I certainly expected more than 4 years and 60k miles for a £115k car!

Has anyone else experienced this?

It is quite common on the TDV6 as fitted to the S-type Jag.
The cause in this case is oil dilution with fuel due to failed DPF regens and the engine runs on the oil.
I believe this was due to poor software handling of the DPF regen.
Not heard of this cause on LR engines.
I also know of someone who had this happen on a Pug.

There were very high winds at the time whilst going up 25% gradient hill. Could this have been a factor?

Does this very unfortunate event point to the turbo drain mod on all 4.4 TDV8's being more preventative than just dealing with the undesirable smoke when the second turbo cuts in, or have I misinterpreted the potential source of the oil entering the combustion cycle?
