VED Nightmare

Now one of the most complex systems in the West and a ridiculous extra cost to motorists. My TD V8 3.6 will cost £570 next year thanks to the sneaky increase. What a Pee take and all because we have had years of this planet is dying nonsense.

Our cars are heavy. It's not like a slight rise will affect us - take it with the choice of big metal box you drive Smile Land Rover Addict

VED should simply be put on fuel. Big cars with lower mileage would be similar to small cars higher mileage. The more fuel you use, the more you pollute and the more you pay. People visiting the UK from europe would also be paying UK VED too. Simple system and absolutely fair for all. BMW i3 Electric Car

I totally agree (and insurance should be in there too) - however the great unwashed (who it appears also caused this awful mess we are in now!) would not understand it ...... Land Rover Addict

agree include tax and insurance on fuel and then we would have no more uninsured drivers. Just include third party insurance and then if you want fully comp you pay for the extra yourself. 2010 3.6TDV8 Stornoway Grey/ Black interior - gone

Couldn't agree more, relatively low cost to admin, equitable to all types of road users and perhaps discourage unnecessary journeys, so an environmental benefit too.

I wonder if overall, it would be tax revenue neutral?

The issue of applying VED to fuel is something that I simply cannot understand why it isn't done. Everyone talks about it, so what exactly is the reason it isn't done?

It's such an obvious way to make it fair for all and it also penalises those who buy PHEV's then never plug them in, resulting in about 25 mpg on a good day. Drives:

Including insurance would be wrong I think as some drivers are more careful than others. Some can reverse (men) and some can’t (women).

ISTR that some states in the US had basic (third party) insurance in their tag or license plate fees. You want cover for your damage/injury/car etc, you pay an insurer in addition. So that might be a way. Perhaps a US member could comment.

Our gov will never coutenance losing any revenue from drivers etc., we are after all an easy touch. Didn't they raise the VED on those zero banded not too long ago as they thought too many people were buying the cars to avoid VED?

and this from the BBC in 2013
Road tax, founded in 1909 to fund road-building, was already on the way out by 1926 when Chancellor of the Exchequer Winston Churchill is reported to have said in a memo:

"Entertainments may be taxed; public houses may be taxed… and the yield devoted to the general revenue. But motorists are to be privileged for all time to have the tax on motors devoted to roads? This is an outrage upon… common sense."

The Treasury got its way, of course, and the tax was folded into general funds.

Comments welcome Mr. Green Cheers

The reasons for not adding VED to fuel tax have been given many times, but the same question keeps getting asked!

George Osbourne had ambitions to ring fence car tax to roads.

Phillip HAMMOND said ( or leaked) by 2020, this would be effected

I guess until 2020 arrives, it remains an ambition! Filters are in fact so good that in certain circumstances, when the ambient air is already polluted, a diesel car will tend to extract more particles from the air than it emits. Emissions Analytics worked with........etc etc

He who dies with the most toys wins...
