Key won’t turn in ignition

2008 3.6 tdv8 , car unlocks but when you put the key in the ignition it only turns about an 1/8 of a turn , there is an intermittent clicking noise from the area near the key but it doesn’t do it every time , so I disconnected the battery reconnected it and the key turned and car started fine , turned it off the back to the same again key won’t turn , before I start throwing money at this thing was just looking for ideas where to start , I fitted a new switch to the ignition about 2 years ago so I’m quite happy with how to remove the ignition barrel etc ,just wondering is it possible it’s a key issue or the transponder coil , I’ve only got one key so can’t try another key ,any pointers most welcome or if anyone has experienced the same thing how was it resolved , starting to consider part ex and a newer 4.4.

If the car was an earlier model (2002-2007), I’d of said it sounds like the dreaded steering lock fault, but thought LR sorted that problem in the later models, however they’re all voltage sensitive. Might be worth checking the battery voltage to make sure it’s not low – doesn’t have to be too low to upset the electronics especially now its getting colder. Otherwise you’ll need a code reader or IID to read the faults before you go off in all directions

To update for info , steering lock is knackered which is a new column , can’t be bothered with it anymore so I part exed and am now the owner of an 11 plate Mercedes ml 350 , just couldn’t justify flinging anymore money at this 10 yr old car and waiting for the next £1000 bill . Will possibly get another one in a few years.

There’s a company that repair 1/2 columns called Rurner Diagnostics

Cars gone now but thanks any way , the car had several other minor faults as well , also the rear wings had perforated with rust along with the upper tailgate which was going to require more than a quick respray , so getting rid was about the best option
