nearside suspension just collapsed

Morning,
spotted some fuel or oil in the puddles just outside my house, cant be sure it was from me but wanted to check. So i raised the car into wading mode left the drivers door open so I could take a look under and see if anything was wet or dripping fluid. Nothing really to see, so i guess it wasnt me.

Anyway very loud shhh of air not really a bang and the front nearside dropped to the deck. Censored typical i thought.

Restarted the car lowered it back to standard height and the car leveled, however now there is a small hissing from the near side, no air suspension lights or warnings.

Compressor is working no unusually loud noises.

A bit of history, about 6 or 7 years ago the off side went and was replaced by the LR dealer, they didn't feel both needed changing so its the original bag.

My immediate reaction is its a leaking bag, but then got to wondering if its a hose let go?

background its a L322 54 plate 3.0 td6 at 142,000 miles

I think its probably the bag but whats the best way of checking and has anyone heard of a hose or fitting going rather than the bag?

It's going to be either the bag or the hose / connector as you say.

Only thing you can do is jack it up and find out where the hissing noise is coming from.

The hose is right at the top isnt it?
any idea if you can see it?

My guess is at 142,000 miles the bag is going to be pretty shot, si maybe its best to get it out to inspect, it will have to come out anyways?

So may as well replace while doing it.

My bag went under literally identical circumstances. In normal and access height the bag has some overlap in the bottom half, if you take it up to offroad height it becomes single walled and any perishing is likely to let go at this point. I'd be really surprised if it wasn't the bag, but definitely worth checking the hose first. Mine also wasn't a soap and water job to find the split, I could have fit my head in the hole left!

Im pretty sure its going to be the bag, so ordered a replacement from Island4x4, so back on the spanners!

As gj88 says change in pairs.
Just changed my passenger side as I had already changed the drivers side that went bang.
Easy job changed the whole strut in 30 mins.

Hopefully someone can help.
OK so air bag has a nice big split so that appears to be the culprit.

When i removed the old air bag i had 2 grey washers small plastic and a rubber one floating around in the old bag.

All other washers stayed on the strut so thats fine i have just replicated

I need to know which order the small washers go on reassembly?

in the new one i had 2 new rubber rings and 2 new grey plastic washers?

Anyone?

Ok so found a site that explained the order of the washers and it looks like they sit just below the threaded part of the shock and insert into the underside of the rubber top mount.

So all re assembled, it went back in very quickly. Car took a while to level and was still rear up but after a few minutes it was up and level, took it for a quick run 10 minutes all seems fine much better goes up into wading mode and down into access mode fine.

But when switched off the new corner, nearside, appears to drop. not to its bump stops, but seems slightly unlevel.

Now when the engine is running, its hard to hear if there is a leak, and when raised into wading mode switch off the engine, i cant hear anything so im assuming its not significant if there is a leak.

Question, could it be the ecu needs recalibrating? or most likely a small leak somewhere.

Im kinda hoping after a few days it will all settle down?

Any advice or experiences gratefully received.

Did you replace the air line fitting with a new one?

Did you re-use the old seals or were they all new ones. We replaced ours with an Arnott replacement and it came with all new seals I must admit I wouldn't want to re-use old ones Confused

Recently had our nearside bag go and the other day the drivers side followed after it was in offroad mode. Ours went catastrophically with an almighty bang Laughing 2011 4.4 TDV8 Autobiography

Sorry i started a new thread just on the leak!

Yes all new o rings that came with the kit and tried to put them in the same order as the old one.

I did re-use the air connection.
