Thanks again for the reply, this was also my first thought and I took it back to the dealer who serviced, they checked and the O ring was damaged so a new one was fitted. But the issue still persists, so I think it may have been just bad luck.. or maybe new clean oil dislodged some carbon etc.. I'm grasping at straws I realise here! Shocked

Looks like Baltic and I are giving the same advice again (we've both been there and got the "i've replaced my oil cooler seals" tee shirts) Rolling with laughter

The thing about oil is it gets everywhere, so you may have solved the issue but are seeing leftover oil.

I did think that it could be residual oil, but I checked the dipstick level and it was saying add 1.5L oil so it's defiantly still loosing oil...

while I hate to be cynical, it never ceases to amaze me the number of stories I hear of cars being perfectly fine going in for routine services and miraculously within a day or two of that service, faults suddenly appear that require fixing.

There’s usually a connection....in that you had the vehicle serviced and then soon afterwards it starts throwing oil out. Then the garage says the O ring was incorrectly fitted anyway.
Does the warranty company offer a replacement vehicle?
At the very least I would return the vehicle to the dealer immediately and request they sort the issue out and provide another vehicle . It seems ludicrous that your are expected to run the vehicle until mid Dec whilst it’s devouring oil and presumably covering the engine with the stuff, having to fund all the oil being used, not being able to go any distance and having to check the oil level consistently which is not that easy with the digital dipstick. I tried to check mine 3 times today, and only got a reading after half an hour driving and then leaving it for another hour...
Also, whilst the garage can only take the car mid Dec, it might be post Xmas or post 2018 before you get it back...
I would be getting rather tough with the garage and warranty co imho.

It could be that replacing the o ring has cured the issue and that the digital dipstick is still reporting low oil when it may have stabilised.

A litre and a half is a lot of oil to have lost and it would not just be showing at the bell housing, but would have Greenpeace on your tail thinking that another Torrey Canyon had appeared.

The only way to be sure is for the garage to clean it all up with Gunk or some other engine degreaser and wait for new signs to appear. That would also help identify the location of the leak.

One last final sanity check.... I have topped it up to the correct level, now I will endure the smoke in case it really is just burning off residual oil, I have an off road section of land I think I may park as vertical as possible in case all the oil that did leak from the oil filter housing has collected and pooled inside the lover V of the engine.. may be I will also drench it in brake cleaner and hopefully dissolve any remaining oil

Brake Cleaner

Just a quick suggestion. Be very careful of pouring brake cleaner in there. Firstly it could be a flammable source and catch on fire depending on brand and consist, oil tends to have a higher flash point. Let it dry out properly. Secondly do not let it touch any of the sealed bearings on alternator, air conditioner etc as it has a bad habit of flushing out permanent bearing lubricant if it manages to penetrate the "sealed" joint. i have seen a number of examples of failed bearings as a result of aggressive degreasing, brake cleanser cleaning of greasy parts (especially clutch throw bearings) which only fail after you have put everything back together and driven about half a mile.

Just a comment on the issue of problems occurring following mechanics intervention. In some parts of Africa they are aptly called "finger problems" which makes sense.

My highly uninformed guess is that it was the oil filter housing seal and it has pumped a significant amount of oil out after it was mis-installed or pinched. Fingers crossed that once its gone it will clear up. Key indicator obviously is continuing loss of oil from sump.

Thank you swissomatic for your reply.

I am in agreeance at the moment. I have checked the oil level and its not budged yet, however it is still smoking quite a bit, and smells of oil burning. Maybe I should go for a long drive and try to burn it all off... fire extinguisher is on hand and ready for a quick spray under the bonnet should it catch fire at all.

I will try to get it really hot to burn off any more residue... like you said, it's a deep V and I lost nearly 2L somewhere so it must be sitting in the inner V of the engine and getting hot. I'd like to think it won't catch fire

The garage will have used an oil extraction pump to remove the old oil, and if you go back they will be able to suck out most of the leaked new oil using the same pump. G reg 2.5VM Vogue Portofino red 1991- 1999

Baltic blue, they Did not use an extraction pump, they dropped the sump and drained from beneath (I watched them and stood at their side as they did it) But great idea on the extraction pump, maybe I can catch any excess that is sitting in the V with a pump. Thumbs Up

Unbelievable Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter
It takes 5 minutes to suck it out, or even taking off the lower drain pipe.

I am interested to know how?

As the new models do not have a dip stick to remove and insert a pipe into for the vacuum machine?
