Key won’t turn in the ignition barrel

Went to start my Rangie today and couldn’t turn the key.

The usual “clicky” sound couldn’t be heard when inserting the key and also there was a red light blinking on the dash.

Read somewhere about pulling fuse 18 and reinserting it, which thankfully worked. Tad stressful as I was at the petrol station with a trailer in tow.

Soooo, what’s the fix? Ignition barrel complete?

Any help appreciated

Cheers 2007 3.6 TDV8

Lots of threads on this problem and most likely the dreaded steering lock fault which is the clicking you would normally hear. No click sound the car will remain immobilised. Firstly check your battery voltage to make sure it’s not low – doesn’t have to be too low to upset the electronics. If alls well volts wise then it could be the early signs of the steering column dying. There are some short term fixes on You Tube but these only tend to delay the inevitable if they work at all; otherwise your looking at a column replacement. I believe there is someone here in the UK and also in Germany that can repair the column - have a search through the threads. Sorry can't give more happy tidings or help

Thanks nobby.

Gotta do a bit more research, I guess.

Most of the threads I’ve been reading seem to be for bmw Rangie so I’m not sure if it’s applicable for me.

Anyone else have experience with this issue? 2007 3.6 TDV8

Ours (2007) was a little iffy when we bought it back in March - sometimes there would be a delay before it clicked after inserting the key and sometimes I had to remove and re-insert the key.

In September we replaced the vehicle battery in prep for the winter as it was obviously getting to the end of its life - since then there have been no problems with the steering lock.

As NobbyC mentions above, it would be worth getting your battery checked, just to make sure it isn't on its last legs Thumbs Up
