I have been looking at buying a RR or RRS (L322 or L320)in the last week and really surprised by the lack of invoices and paperwork that people/garages have to back up each service stamp or item of work and the unexplained gaps in servicing.

Maybe its just me, but does anyone else keep every bit of paperwork for their cars and service them on time to LR/or other schedule or am I being too fussy when expecting invoices to match service book stamps and service intervals?

No service books any more - main dealers can register on line, but if you go to an Indy then you'll need to keep receipts.

I'm in the category of regular service & preventative maintenance, but a bit lax with the paperwork

Sorry I probably should have added I have been looking at L322s and L320s so older models from 5+yrs private + independent garages with nothing available online that I am aware of for pre 14MY.

My one for sale has stamps in service book and loads of receipts in a big folder.

Hi Finchi, lovely car and had a good few looks at your advert yesterday.. I am looking for something newer myself but exactly the type of ownership that seems to be missing out there.. Stamped book, invoices, knowledge of work carried out and car in decent condition. Good luck with your sale mate

Oops, I just clicked on the wrong vote! I always have mine serviced at least to schedule (often before) and keep all the paperwork and receipts in a folder.

Don't service on mileage as I only do 4/5000 a year but do a yearly sevice myself and record this in the sevice book
The car gets a full service all filters changed and oil , diff etc have just been done so a couple of years before I redo them
Cheap if you can do it yourself

Mine's serviced at least yearly alongside the MOT, and anything additional done by myself or my indy as/when needed.

When I sold the Defender at the start of this year I had about an inch of paperwork after 9 years of ownership, will be building up a similar folder for the L322...!

The concept of the survey is flawed

Those that service on schedule and keep all the paperwork are the same sort of people who will feel the need to respond to the survey and those that don't or can't be bothered to keep track of it all will simply skip the survey!

(By the way anyone looking at the sale advert for my L322 will know which camp I am in)

The L322 I've just collected has the heady total of one stamp in the book. Its a 2002 with 123k on the clock. For goodness sake! However I do have several receipts for service like items and even the original bill of sale. The first owner, had it for 6 years, clearly never bothered to take it back to the main dealer for anything. He did just 20k in it in 6 years. Next owner had it until two weeks ago did 100k over the next 10 years or so and has provided some receipts etc. But there is oil in it, it runs nicely so I'm assuming its been changed occasionally. There's even a receipt for some spark plug fitting!

Its currently got a boot full of service items waiting for its slot next week. The receipts for all the parts are already in the history file...! 2005 E60 M5

I keep all receipts, a stamp to me means sweet fa, I feel the proof of purchase via them as more proving provenance.
I’m on the verge of selling mine and have thought that this might put folk off though..

These cars were rich mens toys. Rich people don't give a stuff about their cars, they know get something else new very shortly. Why else do you see 100 grand L405s being washed with gritty buckets on old closed petrol stations?

I bought a Jag XJR last year which had a succession of extremely wealthy owners, every MOT was a fail, one time it went in for test with cords showing on the tyres and wheels so badly curbed they had to be replaced. Its taken me a while and a few quid but its a well made bus and is now tip top.

I also had an Aston DB9 for a while. Its history showed it had a new engine quite early on. Turned out the original multi millionaire owners ran it dry of oil and never had it serviced in the first 3 years. Their house was worth 26 million quid, so whats 16 grand for an engine eh?

The PO of my new RR proudly told me it was serviced and stamped yearly by a dealere but he never lifted the bonnet in between. Some people call that good maintenenace!?

It only takes one bad owner to screw a nice car, but thankfully also only one good owner to get things back on track again. Go in and view with your eyes not bits of paper.

PS every single car I have EVER bought that had a full main dealer service hstory has needed rear brakes unseizing/rebuilding and handbrake cables replacing at least, plus a liteny of other "non-service" items. FDSH means nothing but an oil change and wave underneath with a torch once a year.
